My wife and I had the misfortune to book into this establishment. in September.
We are both in our sixties, and, chiefly because my wife was recuperating following an operation and lengthy stay in hospital, we decided to have a break in Galway. To that end, and because the hotel does not provide on-site parking, we took the train from Dublin.
We were relieved to find that the hotel was, as advertised, very close to the railway station. ( In that respect, at least. the promises made in the brochure were correst )
When we checked in at reception we were told that the lift was out of operation but were assured that it would be fixed the following morning. On that assurance we reluctantly accepted a room on the 4th floor.
I have severe arthritis, ( having had both my knees replaced ), suffer from serious hypertension and diabetes and, had we known what we were going to have to endure for the next three days we would have been out of the Eyre Square hotel and into any one of the many fine hotels within easy walking distance of this establishment as fast as my arthritis snd 68 years would allow.
Having endured our own personal Calvary of 86 steps we entered a room which in no way replicated the photographs in the brochure. It was dark and a great deal smaller than the three star accomodation that we would have expected at the price we paid. The one chair in the room had a very bad stain on the material covering the seat, the furniture was dreary, drab and long past it's sell-by date, the coverlet on the bed had a large rip in the side and, had it not been for the fact that we were exhausted from our Everest-like efforts to reach this 'haven', we would have departed at once to a more salubrious hostelry.
The towels in the bathroom were not sufficient, ( in quantity ) for a double room, and the quality of the towels provided was such that one would have been better off drying oneself with one of the better-class high-absorbent kitchen papers available in the supermarket across the road.
The food was hot, adequate, and the staff were both polite and helpful, ( insofar, presumbably, as the hotel management allowed them to be ).
However, if you would like a really first class meal, served piping hot and prepared just the way you ordered, walk a few paces to the nearby Park House Hotel
We were offered a change to a first-floor room on the evening of our departure, but that would have saved us no effort or pain since we would have had to climb to the room to pack our bags and descend, anyway. Logistically, this offer was a classic case of "too little, too late".
Galway has a great deal to offer it's visitors.
Sadly, the same cannot be said for the Eyre Square Hotel.
