The Marian Lodge Guesthouse is by no means flash, in fact when you enter the rooms you think you have stepped in to a timewarp - circa 1950s perhaps. This doesn't have to be a negative - think of it as quaint, I honestly don't think they have updated the decor since then. It's a little bit like your nana's house and has a bit of a nana 'mutton' smell' about it. Despite this, it is clean, and they did clean out our room everyday.

The hostess was very hospitable and very helpful and there was internet access which was great. Breakfast consisted of a full Irish breakfast and/or cereal. The only problem we had was the first morning we were there having to put up with cold showers (they obviously need to do something about their water tank as it looked like it was a busy time and obviously their water tank was not up to it.

The location is a bit far out if you want to be neear Galway City - don't bother staying there as you will need a car to get there. But close to catch the ferry to the Aran Island. Salthill is by the beach but a rather uninspiring location with not much there except crap pubs and restaurants and an 'entertainment centre' (ie: arcade).

As i said it's nothing flash and at 38 Euros per person reasonable for Ireland. For a place to kip in the evening - it's perfectly fine.

Just returned from 3 nights at Marian Lodge with my wife and 18 month old daughter. The room was OK but it was a bit dusty and tatty. On the second day we were told to take the rubbish from our room (nappies etc.) with us rather than put it in the bin of the B&B and find a bin in a park or elsewhere because the lodges bin was full! This was rather annoying as travelling with a young child can generate a lot of rubbish. To cap it off on the third morning we had no hot water (there is nothing quite like a cold shower in the morning!). Got down to the dinning room to discover there was no room for breakfast and the host told us she would not be able to accommodate us for some time!

We then saw her knock on another guest’s room and invite them down to breakfast! As we were travelling a long way that day we decided not to wait for breakfast and told the host we wanted to check out. She then made us wait 10 minutes until she was ready, then couldn't find her visa machine, had to phone for an authorisation number etc. even told us to keep quiet when she made the call much to the annoyance of the guests stood waiting with us.

Perhaps she needs to employ someone else to help her run the place because she doesn't appear to be able to run it on her own. If you do stay there watch out for the host doing the hard sell for day trips etc. (I presume she gets a financial incentive from the tour operators to do this). We watched her berate an American couple on the second morning while we ate our breakfast.

Finally it is also a good walk from the centre of Salthill and there is only one Chinese restaurant nearby and little else so you will need transport.
