I asked for a special breakfast in advance which they did not provide. Little effort made. For the price I would have expected a much better service. There are so many b&bs in Galway - there has to be one better than this.

I give an average rating for this B&B largely in comparison to other b&b's visited during a trip all around Ireland. While there were no major problems with the b&b it was substantially more expensive than many other b&b's and while it was in one of Ireland's larger cities I would have expected a tad more for the price. The room was nice but the bathroom a little dated and rundown. The staff was very friendly and it was about a 5 minute walk from city center of Galway. Finally, the breakfast was good but served buffet style.
My wife and I have just returned from a stay at this B&B in Galway city. However, I would describe the standard of accomodation as being more of a hostel standard than a B&B. To begin with, there are a number of rooms built just off the garden, so you enter the room directly from the garden, which results in a filthy carpet. The room itself is tiny, not much biggger than the size of the bed. The only furniture consisted of 1 bedside locker and 1 shelf, so it would not suit anyone staying for a lenthy trip. My wife also didn't appreciate the cobweb of spiders above the bed. The bathroom was hardly big enough to turn around in, although it was reasonably clean. One of the best parts of staying in a B&B is the freshly cooked breakfast you usually get. However, the breakfast here had either been cooked the night before or very early in the morning and kept on a heater, resulting in the food being dried out and almost inedible. There are a lot of B&Bs in Galway that are great value, so make sure to try all of them before this one.
Have traveled extensively thru Europe, Central & S. America, North America and lived and worked in Asia for many yrs. Having spent so much time in Asia in factory cities off the beaten path I thought I'd experienced the worst of the worst. Never expected to actually find it in Galway, Ireland.
Amber Lodge was simple disgusting. Two couples. We stayed two nights and got the two rooms in front by the road despite the B&B not being filled and requesting quiet. Our room was approx 8 X 7 ft with a nonworking heater during an unusually cold two March nights ... almost freezing and only a light blanket. Impossible to sleep between the cold and road noise. Bkfst was OK and the only thing acceptable in the joint. Came back to our room for second night and it hadn't been made up at all ... bed not made, bath not cleaned and wet towels still there from morning. And the bath itself was a 4x6 joy with a drain in the center and the entire bath wet from the shower.
The owner had left for the weekend. Two Russian (?) girls were running the place but one decided to skip work Fri/Sat so there was only the one poor over matched girl who barely spoke English and couldn't have cared less about the problems and in fact asked what we expected for the small amount ...are you kidding ( !?! ) ...we were paying and for a B & B. I've stayed in better $5 rooms in Chittagong, Bangladesh.
I would like to begin by saying that the staff in this establishment were more then friendly to us but the bed & breakfast itself left alot to be desired!! We asked for a room at the rear of the house due to the traffic passing at the front. We were shown to a detached building at the back of the house, with its own entrance. I wouldn't put my dog in such a place, it was horrendous, to say the least!
It was cold, damp, miserable and far too small for two adults. The en suite left alot to be desired, condensation dripped off the ceiling as we tried brushing our teeth in the morning!! The breakfast was the final blackspot of the whole thing, it was disgusting to say the least. It was hard to make out whether they were offering porridge or scrambled eggs!! The fact that they used night light candles to keep the food warm was ironically funny!! The exterior of the B&B was also in desperate need of a good cleaning, a sewerage pipe had become blocked at the side of the house & it proceeded to flow all over the yard, near the entrance to our shally. There was absolutely nothing redeeming about this house and I would NEVER set foot in it again.
