“Loved it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2013

Stayed At the Grand canal hotel to go to a game at the Aviva stadium a few months ago and as a treat we booked into a suite and it was a lovely room, wrap around balcony with a great view of the stadium,it was so convenient for the game as it was just a stroll up the road.As i said the room was lovely, the bed was so comfy, and the room itself was spotless.2 flat screen tvs, ipod docking station...every convenience we could want.
The staff were lovely and the breakfast was perfect,we didn't have dinner in the hotel but if the breakfast was anything to go by then I'm sure it's good.
We've decided to go back on the 12th of this month as we are going to a show in the grand canal theatre, and they do a great package for those attending,am looking forward to our stay again, might not be a suite this time but judging by our last stay I'm sure we'll be very happy.

We wanted a quiet, clean and comfy place to stay over new years at Dublin, which we found. The price was reasonable for the time of year, the place was clean and quiet at nights and 15 minutes walk to the city centre. The staff were very friendly and helpful during our stay and really made you feel welcome. We didnt use the restaurant at the hotel so cant comment on that. The only slight problem was that there was no one on reception at checkout, but no major drama. Would use again.

Booked this hotel for New Years in Dublin at a very reasonable rate. Hotel is a short distance from town with secure underground parking and free wifi in all areas, are just some of the benefits.

Check in was quick and efficient. Lady behind counter was friendly and very accommodating to our requests for rooms beside each other and my buddies wanting a double room even when they had booked a twin room by mistake.

Rooms very comfortable and spotless. They seemed to only have been redecorated, as carpet and paint seems very new. Can't fault the rooms at all. Hotel has a lively bar and a busy restaurant and seems to be a hot spot for the locals. With all this activity going on, rooms where well sound proofed even tho we were on the second floor. Only issue we had which we didn't report was we found the water a little cool in the shower the next morning, however it was around 12pm.

I would have no problem at all booking this hotel again and recommending it, and would be prepared to pay a little more if it meant having another enjoyable stay.

There is a saying - 'you get what you pay for'. I think the words were written with Grand Canal Hotel in mind. This hotel is ideal if you are attending an event at Aviva Stadium - which is nearby - at a bargain rate and you don't intend to spend much time at the hotel. Full stop.

I feel much of the problems we encountered during our stay below were down to the hotel being chronically understaffed.

To start - first impressions were - it was the most soulless characterless hotel I have ever stayed in. There is zero atmosphere here. The lobby is packed with sofas and chairs - but you may as well be sitting in an airport. It is generally grubby and shabby. The front windows, doors and even the lifts were all just downright dirty. I had a room on the 5th floor - this was supposed to be an Executive Room. I don't think I ever slept in such a tiny room. It is not suitable as a room for 2. To add to the problem they have put a big leather chair in the corner - which is far too big for such a tiny room. The heat was stifling. We were looking down on to a yard where the rubbish/broken furniture was stored. Staff also used it as a smoking area. It was depressing to look out onto it. The most annoying part was we paid for the privilege of having an Executive room. Friends of ours stayed the same 2 nights as us - booked a regular room - they got a huge bright airy room with 2 beds and a refurbished bathroom - all for €59 per night!!!!! Why on earth would you give your best room to somebody who pays less money?????????

We are early risers - so we left the hotel at 8.30am each morning and returned at 4.15pm to get ready for the shows we were attending. However we had to stand in the corridor as the housekeeping staff were only beginning to clean our room. I have never come across this in a hotel before.

I left my room on the first day and pressed the lift button - when the carriage arrived - I couldnt believe my eyes - it had the most disgustingly filthy rusted interior. It was like nothing I have ever seen before. I called my husband and we could only deduce that it was some sort of service lift. There was no signs to say this lift was out of bounds to guests. It could well be a guest lift -we still don't know.

Nothing seemed to work as it should - the shower leaked cold water constantly - not pleasant when you are in a warm bath. It was 'touch and go' if your room card worked on your door or the fire doors between floors - causing annoyance and frustration. People had left take away boxes/wrappers on the corridors - they were not taken away by staff - just left there stinking out the area.

Breakfast wasn't bad - as it was self service and there was a good enough variety, However again it was understaffed. You didnt get anything you asked for - tea/coffee/bread!!!! There were other annoying things like going from table to table looking for milk and salt/pepper. The staff couldnt cope with the number of guests (it wasnt full by any stretch of the imagination)

I tried to order room service from the bar - the phone was picked up repeatedly and hung up again - incredibly annoying.

I could go on an on about the unpleasant stay we had - suffice it to say we will not be returning and I would not recommend The Grand Canal Hotel to anybody.

Room Tip: Dont stay here

Excellent hotel, from the moment we first arrived to checking out everything felt 5 star. The receptionists were so friendly, restaurant staff brilliant and the room immaculate. The Gasworks bar next door but attached had such a great atmosphere we could have spent our holiday there and not bothered going into the city.

Room Tip: Book early

Arrived at this hotel on Sunday afternoon with my husband, staff at reception friendly, room and bathroom clean and bright. Had coffee in bar before leaving to go shopping, was disappointed to see a chip at the side of my cup and limited selection of snack bars. What can I say about the pre theatre meal in the restaurant... it was the worst meal and menu I have seen for a long time, couldn't eat it and that went for both of us. We did however only get charged for one meal.
Courtesy buses were old, dirty and smelly and we had to pay for that experience.Breakfast was ok mostly tinned fruit, cooked breakfast was plentiful and staff were very obliging. I did mention to reception staff about the buses before leaving and they said they would look into it.

Wouldn't recommend this hotel to family and friends.

Hello
Thank you for taking the time to post your comments. I was disappointed to hear of your experience in the restaurant. I know you discussed them with the manager on the night and I am sorry we were not able to resolve it satisfactorily at that time. We have reviewed your comments in detail and will continue to work to improve our options and standards. We have also have assurances that the buses will also improve.
Thank you again for taking the time to provide your feedback.

This is a lovely hotel with fantastic staff. Every member of staff greeted me with a smile, even at 6.30 in the morning on my way to the gym. The food in the Gasworks bar is amazing, try the chicken burger, it's not just a normal chicken burger!! All in all a lovely hotel to stay in.
