Owner description: Christ Church Cathedral is one of Dublin's oldest buildings, a leading visitor attraction and a place of pilgrimage for almost 1,000 years. Famous for its breathtaking beauty, magnificent architectural features and wonderful floor tiles, Christ Church is also popular as a venue and is host to many high profile concerts throughout the year. It is home to the tomb of Strongbow, leader of the Normans, who captured Dublin in 1170. The Medieval Crypt, one of the largest in Britain and Ireland, extends under the entire Cathedral and contains The Mummified cat and rat, trapped in the organ in the 1860s.

“Beautiful church, but not the most interesting tour in Dublin”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2013

Christ Church Cathedral is an amazing architectural treasure, a beautiful monument to medieval Dublin and Irish history generally. Taking a tour of the catacombs is an interesting experience, although not the best of the tours available in Dublin. It is pretty cold and drafty in the basement of the church, and the tour tends to drag on a bit with recounting of various English lords and Catholic bishops who were buried in the tombs below. It's worth a visit if you go to Dublinia first and then want to take a quick peek around the inside of the cathedral - but the tour is not going to rank highly on your list of things you did in Ireland.

“Incredible!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

The whole of Christ Church if beautiful, but the floors are a work of art. Knowing that parts of The Tudors had been filmed there added to the interest and seeing the costumes was a treat. This church is breathtaking. Words cannot describe the beauty.

“Lovely”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

It's a beautiful church on the outside, but because of our walking tour, we weren't able to get a look on the inside. It is situated in a lovely area with lots to do. It's a must see while in Dublin.

“View from the outside”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2013

The view from the outside is the best. Inside is nothing extraordinary, especially if you've been to some of the other churches around Europe. Skip the hefty 6 euro fee and wasted time and just stroll past it.

Remember, this building as it stands now is less than 200 years old.

Thank you for your review. I'm not sure what you have been reading re. the age of the building. The nave was extensively restored in the 1870s, however much of the fabric, including the 13th century north wall and transepts, dates from much earlier, whilst the12th century cathedral crypt is the oldest structure in Dublin and contains some Viking foundations from the 11th century.
As a registered charity which receives no state funding we are grateful to all our visitors for their contribution to cathedral upkeep - I'm sorry you thought 6e per adult was 'hefty', it's a lot less than many attractions in the city and includes admission to the cathedral crypt and 'Treasures of Christ Church' exhibition.

“Expensive for a cathedral”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2013

The entrance fee is a little steep for what you get to see (€6). The cathedral is beautiful but it’s nothing different from many of the others in Europe. The crypt was also disappointing. While there were some old graves there was not a lot to look at. I also found it cheap and a little disrespectful that they built the café over some of the existing graves.

Thank you for your review. I'm sorry you weren't completely happy with your visit to the cathedral. Our entrance fee is lower than most other attractions in Dublin city and, as a registered charity dependent on the income generated by tourists to survive, it the least we can charge to ensure we can keep the cathedral open for visitors. The 'graves' you speak of in our 12th century crypt (one of the largest in Europe and the oldest structure in Dublin) are actually monuments to people who have (or in some cases actually haven't) been buried in the cathedral nave, which were moved down there during a Victorian restoration of the cathedral - so they bear little reference to the final resting place of the people they commemorate.
