“Very nice hotel but careful with the Bar bill”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2007

We have stayed at the schoolhouse hotel with a couple from December 16 for 2 nights. The hotel is nice, breakfast wonderful. Unfortunately we had a very bad experience at the bar.. Here is the story: When we went back from town late that night, we took a drink at the bar and put the bill on our room. Later our friends bought us another round but paid cash. My wife found out that we paid 50% more for the same drinks. After complaining, the bar tender recognized that he made an error on BOTH bills, too expensive. He issued another bill that my wife signed on the back.. When we checked out we found out that the bar bill was doubled! We argued with the front desk employee who made the appropriate correction when she found out that the “new” bar bill was not signed. When we wrote to the hotel management they inform us that the bar is managed by an outside company….Unfortunately.

Having had such a delightful stay at the Schoolhouse last July, I was really looking forward to returning there again. My husband and I spent 3 nights there over the Christmas break. To begin with the heating was not working and was not fixed during our stay. The Schoolhouse did provide electric heaters in the bedrooms, however the bar and restaurant were very uncomfortable and I had to wear my coat and scarf at all times.

The bedroom:
We were allocated room 219 on arrival. The bathroom was terrible. The floor had obviously sunk and therefore the bath had come away from the wall. This left a gap of about an inch all around the bath and the thoughts of the bacteria building up was enough to make my skin crawl. There was also a horrible smell in the bathroom, and I can only assume that this was from the water going down between the bath and the wall. The bedroom itself was lovely and the bed was again wonderful. However, I do not believe that this room should have been allocated to anyone with a bathroom in this condition, and it was obvious that this did not just happen the day before we arrived.

Breakfast:
The fantastic breakfasts that we received during our last stay were replaced with very unappetizing ones. The presentation alone was awful, the sausages were deep fried and crispy and the bacon (7 pieces!) were undercooked, pale and piled onto the plate in a heap. The pastries were not fresh and both the tea and coffee were cold every morning. The final straw was the sour milk on the table on our 3rd morning.

The Bar:
The restaurant was closed so we ate in the bar each evening and I have to say we were not disappointed. Compliments to the chef – it is just a pity the same person was not doing the breakfast shift.
The toilets in the bar are a disgrace. The ladies 'stink' of a horrible sewage problem. I remember this from my last visit however it had got worse. There are 3 toilets in the bar and you practically have to stand on the seat of the toilet to close the door in each of them. Also the hand-dryer makes lots of noise but no air comes out of it! The smell was so bad on this visit that I chose to use the toilet in reception which was at all times spotlessly clean.
I take no pleasure in giving out about the Schoolhouse, but if you read my review from my first visit you will see that I was most impressed last time. I don't know how they could get it so wrong on this occasion. The Management seriously need to renovate the bathrooms in both the bedrooms and the bar, or else they will lose their 4* status very soon (if they have not lost it already).

Finally, no problems with parking on this visit and all the staff were delightful.

My husband and I stayed her for 3 nights 1-4 December. The hotel is superb, really comfortable and warm. The food at breakfast was delicious and plentiful. However, hardly any of the waiting staff were Irish. One of the waitresses was a bit surly but overall a superb experience. Very helpful front desk staff.

We stayed at the Schoolhouse for 3 nights during our travels throughout Ireland. It was by far the best and most comfortable nights sleep that we had. The girls that worked the desk here were so friendly and helpful to us. The wait staff was very quick to bring us drinks to the room. The bed was so comfortable and they have an awesome TV, which we would watch at night. We had a wonderful stay in Dublin, it's a great little City and the people are so great in Ireland. The food was excellent also and they sure put out a huge spread for breakfast!
Thanks to all of you for making our stay extra special!

We loved this hotel! I had stayed at the Shelbourne a few years ago and this was so much better. The location is maybe two blocks further from the action than we would have preferred, but that is nothing when the hotel is so creative and unique.

It is adorable inside and out, but it is also so well appointed. The bed was by far the most comfortable of anywhere we stayed during our two weeks in Italy and Ireland. The room was spacious and clean. We loved it.

The pub at the hotel is cozy and the restaurant was very good. We enjoyed the breakfast in the morning also.

A great pick for Dublin!

We were one of a pair of couples who had a wonderful weekend at the Old Schoolhouse in Dublin.
The rooms were all spotless, sumptuously decorated and well furnished, with great bathrooms and entertainment facilities.
The reception staff extended us a warm welcome and were very helpful. In fact all the people we met at the hotel were very friendly!
The bar on the side of the hotel was quite lively but did not detract from the serenity of the accommodation areas at all.
Breakfast in the main restaurant was as fantastic as it’s surroundings.
All in all, a great place to stay!

  • Liked — The character of the place, quite charming!
  • Disliked — A little bit far to walk to the city centre for some I suspect.
