Last year I booked the Clontarf Castle hotel because there was an offer on, and my colleague and I were very impressed by the hotel. So this week when we returned to Dublin for business we booked it again for 2 nights. Not only is the hotel beautifully decorated, but the bed must be the best bed i've ever slept in in a hotel ! I don't always sleep well in hotels but again I sleep very well due to the comfie beds and quiet surroundings. The room I had was great, and offered complimentary tea/coffee cookies (which is always appreciated after a long day of meetings..)
The first night we ate at the bar, the food was very nice and affordable, good atmosphere as well. The second night we tried the restaurant (michelin recommended) and it was fine but not as special as I expected, maybe I wasn't hungry enought that night. The breakfast is fine, althought I think it should be included in the price of the room. The staff of both restaurant/bar, the concierge and the room maids were all very polite, friendly and helpful. On the other hand, the reception staff was not the most friendly, they were polite but very cold and not a smile on their face (Maria should learn to smile that would make a huge difference ! ) the blond lady who followed shift was also quite grumpy, none of them could crack a smile, a big shame for such a hotel, especially because they are the first people the guests meet.
In summary it is a great place to try, not as expensive as people might think for such a grandiose hotel, the decor inside is really amazing and the rooms very confortable. it's only about 15 Euros by taxi from the airport and about 20mn off peak hours. Well worth trying for a change from the 'normal' looking business hotels, and for sure a big hit for couples or even family with kids who would love the castle atmosphere ! In fact as my husband and I are invited to a wedding in Dublin in August i've decided to stay at the hotel again so my husband and son can enjoy this beautiful place.
