I stayed in The Morgan for my 25th birthday this year. Neither my boyfriend nor I had been to Dublin before, so we thought we'd treat ourselves and splash out on a luxury hotel in the middle of the city.
Upon arrival, we were looked at by the snooty receptionist as if we were lost. We were ordered into a very dark lift with rudimentary directions to the room, along a similarly dark corridor.
The room was smelly, dirty and had vital things missing, such as pillows. They had obviously just completed work on it somewhere as the bathroom was covered in sawdust and it smelled strongly of paint. All of the furniture was shabby and old, although the bed was very comfy it had definitely seen better days!
We asked to change rooms when the curtain rail fell down. To do this we had to trail all the way down to reception, fighting past the chambermaids and their paraphernelia on the way. I explained the issue and we were given a key card and told to look at another room. This one was smaller, dirtier and had no bath - a must for me when in hotels. After visitng the reception for the second time, we eventually convinced someone from the front desk to come with us and show us round another room. This time, the room was still shabby and worn but by this time (four rooms in) I couldn't be bothered and was just happy that there was no sawdust in the bathroom and the curtain rail did not fall down when you opened the curtain.
The rest of the stay ( a two night break) we tried to avoid reception as much as possible and concentrate on Dublin, which is a lovely city. Unfortunately, this wasn't possible as our key cards stopped working on the evening of the first full day. Breakfast was very expensive and an added charge on an already steep room rate given the standard of the rooms. The staff here were surly and acted again as if we were inconveniences rather than customers. There was a limited selection and the breakfast room was the bar, so it felt like eating in a dingy airport.
Please, please, don't stay here. The location was lovely and the beds comfy but you'd get the same standard from a hostel, with friendlier staff.
