“Skylon Dublin - Mixed Reviews”

Dublin Skylon Hotel

We have just returned from a weekend trip away to Dublin from Leeds Bradford.

The flights with Ryanair were great on the new Boeing 737 - 800 Series planes although not much can be said for the Polish cabin crew as you could not understand a word they were saying. After the safety announcement people were asking if they now repeated it in English!! Anyway the planes were nice and we were only up in the air 25 minutes before making our decent.

From Dublin Airport it is easy to get to the hotel. Outside the main terminal building jump on the regular bus number 16, 16 N or 41 to Drumcondra - Skylon Hotel is part of the route so you just ask for a ticket to Skylon in Drumcondra, the bus stops just opposite the hotel. The journey takes only around 15 minutes and costs only 1 Euro 60. (Buses come every 10 minutes!)

To get into town just jump on any bus saying city centre at that side of the road, tickets only cost 1 Euro 40 into town and it taked about 10 minutes, we did walk it in under 20 minutes as the city centre is just at the bottom of the road, you simply just follow it into the centre. To get back it is best to get the number 16 from O'Connel Street as this is the most frequent - Just look for the big silver tower and you cant miss it!
The other good thing about this hotels location is that the night bus stops here also and leaves town at about 12:15, 02:00 and 03:00 and costs 4 Euro - check on the website.

Hotel Good Points

The reception area is very nice with sofa's, internet access and waiters so you can order drink / snacks.

The bar was very nice and not overpriced. The staff all friendly and food really good.

The rooms were spacious and bathrooms very nice - although like a lot of hotels the baths are ratehr small! Tv, Iron, Kettle and soft bed with extra pillows!

Hotel Bad Points

When we arrived we noticed building work around the hotel. Alot of building work is going on and it is noisy all day so if your planning to stay in bed all day its not a good idea!
Anyway it seems to be a habbit at the moment when i choose hotels but we had no water from about 14:00 - 18:00 which again is not fun when you want a bath or to use the toilet!

The rooms are starting to look dated with things falling apart and generaly looking scruffy.

The view from my window was awful, again things are generally just dated, scruffy and in need of restoration.

Conclusion

I would visit this hotel again but i would wait until all the building work is finished in the summer and the restraunt re - opens in the spring. I found this hotel cheapest on Expedia with a 2 person 2 night stay only £95.00 total.

“This place is a dump”

My trip to Dublin coincided with Ryder Cup weekend; therefore, finding a hotel was almost impossible. The Skylon was basically the only hotel with an available room, which is why we ended up there. The fact the hotel had an available room on a weekend when all other hotels in the city where fully booked should give you a good idea about the quality of this hotel. The only positive thing I will say about this hotel is that the staff was friendly and accommodating enough, however, this doesn’t change the fact that this hotel is a dump. The first room they put us in was completely unacceptable. The smell of mildew literally punched you in the face when you opened the door of the room. We wouldn’t even enter the room the smell was so bad. We requested a different room and were finally given a “recently refurbished” room, which was barely acceptable. While it was definitely better than the first room, the carpet and furnishings still looked like they had years of wear and tear. There really wasn’t one redeeming quality to this hotel. It smelled of mildew, there was little to no hot water in the morning, the location was not really convenient to town, and to top it all off, they jacked up the rates about three fold due to the Ryder Cup being in town. I just hope they take some of the extra money they extorted from us and actually put it into improving this hotel.

“Steer Clear”

Dublin Skylon Hotel

I would never stay here through choice again.
I was given a smelly smoking room (although it was a rugby weekend, so I presume that's why I couldn't be moved).
What's more, the room was shabby and tatty (holes in the wallpaper, marks on the bed covers).
The bathroom had grouting missing and the bath was half a normal sized bath (at least it gave me a laugh).
The breakfast was well below average, and cost an extra 13.50. Terrible value, even though the waiting staff were lovely.
There's a handful of parking spaces in a chaotic area out front.
To top it all off, I left something valuable in my bedroom and have been trying to contact someone in the hotel about it for three days, with no success.

I read mixed reviews about this hotel on Trip Advisor but my experience staying at the Skylon Hotel was quite positive. The staff was courteous, the room was quite comfortable, the shower was great and the location of the hotel was convenient to Dublin Airport. (The only thing in need of improvement was that my wake-up call never materialized.) I would definitely try to stay there again on future visits to Dublin.

“don't even think about it”

Dublin Skylon Hotel

Day 1 - the lock on my door doesn't work - i have to get reception to let me in. they say they'll change me the next day.
Day 2 - they fail to find me a new room
Day 3 - new room, just over the kitchen. after 3 requests at midnight they turn the kitchen fans off.
Day 4 - getting used to the fact that the room smells. Request new room. They say they don't have one although I know they do as my friend was checking out that day.
Day 5 - the room is not quite as shabby and small as I first thought. but perhaps I have been so squashed now that I have shrunk.
Day 6 - 4th day in a row I have had to phone reception to get the fan turned off. 4th day in a row I've been awoken at 2 am by gurgling radiators.
Day 7 - awoken at 4 am by 5 secs. of fire alarm.
Day 8 - I leave and can once again start to enjoy my life.
I do not recomend this hotel.
