“A Must-See if you're in Dublin. Very moving.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2014

Hands-down the best thing we saw in Dublin.

If, like me, your Irish history isn't up to scratch, definitely take at LEAST an hour (I'd recommend two) to go through the museum before the tour. It'll give you context for the tour itself. There's a LOT of stuff to see and read, and it's all fascinating. I could have spent all day on the second floor looking at all the relics, reading the letters from prisoners, etc.

I can't remember our tour guide's name, but he was great. You could hear the sniffles as a number of people (including me) teared up when he was telling the story of Joseph Plunkett and Grace Gifford's last-minute wedding. The guide was a restrained storyteller--never theatrical--but he didn't need to be. The place is full of emotion.

Admission is unbelievably cheap (€3 for students). I wouldn't describe the visit as "fun," exactly..."haunting" is a better word. I have since recommended it to multiple friends who visited Dublin.

If you do one thing in Dublin, it has to be Kilmainham. Just incredible. I haven't been able to get it out of my head for a month.

“Kilmainham Gaol”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2014

Upon arriving at the gaol, we had to wait for about 20 minutes outside then we were able to purchase our tickets. Once inside, we were able to look around a small but interesting museum until our tour began. Once the tour began, we went through the chilly building and saw the sad conditions the prisoners would have lived in during their time here and learned about famous people who had been executed there. The tour was short, about an hour, and included an interesting talk in the chapel. The tour seemed heavily focused on the Irish rebellion rather than actual history of the jail but was still interesting to listen to. The fee to get in was low so the jail is worth a visit, if you have the time.

“Better understanding of Irish identity!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2014

We had a wonderful tour guide Rory, who explained the whole story behind the Irish struggle for Independence. It was a very moving experience and you could almost feel the pain and struggle of those who languished in those cells. A must see!

“The Jail”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2014

Loved it, about 1 hour tour which was insightful if you are into history. It's a guided tour by default and the guides were pretty knowledgeable and it was quite interesting.
