“sad yet wonderful place to visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2013

a great place to appreciate what the irish had to endure for their freedom. Amazing tours of a place that leaves you in awe of the spirit of the irish freedom fighters and the horrors they faced in jail. The architecture of the jail is beautiful in a haunting way and this is one place no one should miss in dublin!!

“If you don't visit, you don't know your history”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2013

Kilmainham is a must-see visit for visitors and natives alike. It is a great explanation of the history of Ireland's conflict and tells some of the most harrowing and heart-wrenching stories you will hear.

My children thoroughly enjoyed it (11 and 17) and felt they understood history better as a result of visiting.

“Worth a visit, but plan in advance”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2013

When visiting Kilmainham Gaol, you can only visit by means of a guided tour, which fill up. We visited on a Tuesday afternoon - most other places were quiet but there was only one tour with spaces left, and we got two of the last four. Literally 30 seconds later and we would have had a long journey back to the apartment or have had to find somewhere else. Even getting the spaces on the tour, we had a wait of an hour and a quarter. You can absorb this time by visiting the small self guided museum (which is worth a visit whatever you do) or by visiting the cafe, which is average but sells a range of drinks and food.

We could have avoided this by booking in advance for a particular tour, which I highly recommend you do. It is quite a walk from the city centre, but the guided bus tours stop right outside. Note that part of the tour (about 15 minutes) is outdoors.

The price is very reasonable - €6 for an adult and €2 for a student/child. You get your money's worth from the tour, which takes around an hour and a quarter and gives plenty of information on the history of Dublin itself as well as the Gaol (which you may recognise from "The Italian Job" as well as many other films!)

Definitely worth a visit, as it is of huge significance in the city's history, and is great value for a well guided tour.

“Gaol in the rain”

A good and entertaining guided tour, but rather too long a time in the yard in the rain with a gale blowing

“Brilliant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2013

An excellent history of a prison -not just of the events of 1916 but right back to 1798 & before - Kilmainham is a where so many Irish patriots have spent time & is worth visiting just to see the conditions in which political & other prisoners spent their days .
The guide we had was full of interesting bits of information & I hung on to his every word-there were many non Irish amongs the visitors & Id be interested to learn what they thought of the experience . The courtyard where the 1916 leaders were shot is a chilling & place -I would have liked to spend a bit more time there -the museum too is full of interesting memorabilia .
I visited here on a saturday & had to wait 2 hrs before there was space on a tour-(you must be part of a tour)-although the wait & 6 euro was so well worth it-I would def recommend booking online & avoiding the queue-it was great to see so many people visiting this hisstoric place .
