“Needs to be Updated”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2012

Long walk from the center of Dublin. Took a while to find this particular museum, once we got there we stayed only on the first floor. It was educational as far as the names of some animals. Other than that, this museum needs a little color or some modern exhibits to brighten up a dreary looking old fashion museum.

“A little Creep-tastic!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 9, 2012

I've visited some of the best Natural History Museums in the World and this is not one of them. Nicknamed "The Dead Zoo", you feel like you've been transported back in time to the interior of a Victorian museum. And in this case, it's not charming.

The museum is dark, a little dirty, and creaky. There's also not a lot of accessibility for folks who have trouble getting around - lots of stairs, few/no ramps or lifts. The collection is in poor condition. For example, the rhino is missing it's horn. In many cases, you can see the incisions on the animals' skins where they were poorly taxidermied. In some cases (like on the elephant), the incision is then poorly masked with paint. Not world class, folks. Also poorly done is the interpretation of the exhibitions. There were small signs identifying the specimen, but nothing to explain anything else - when/where the animals lived, what they ate, etc.

Eat before you arrive - there are no cafes or beverages available for purchase at the museum.

On the good side, the museum was free and the small kids seemed to be enjoying themselves. But I'd only plan on a quick visit. It's overall kinda creepy!

“Your kids will LOVE this”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2012

Although this place is only two floors, it packs a huge punch! My daughter, 3 years old, enjoyed every inch of this place. The animal presentation was so awesome. I particular loved the Irish Deer.

“Birthday Treat”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2012

Went on my 46th birthday, and really enjoyed it. The display of animals both Irish and international is very large. Downstairs is all Irish native animals and the variety was suprising to me as well as the locations of where and indeed when the exhibits were found.
Upstairs is mostly more exotic animals and it was fascinating to stand beside some of these creatures and get an idea of their scale.
A very interesting and educational Museum. Highly recommended.
