“Rip off dung hole.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2012 via mobile

Stayed 1 nite. 25 Euros for 1 bed room. How do they justify charging that for basically a cell? Soap dispenser was a nice touch tho, shame there was no soap in it. Bed was rock hard and my back is now killing me. Was noisy too. Toilet and shower room dirty, smelly, no hot water or bog roll. Apart from that it was grand. I won't be back & neither should you.

Unlike the welcome the building is well worn. On the plus side It has a great location, friendly and informative staff, free internet and breakfast. On the down side it has small rooms that look like they could do with a good make over (the carpet was being replaced during my stay which was nice to see, but the smell of the carpet adhesive wasn't the most attractive). All of the bedrooms also possess doors that have windows built in, so if you like a dark room to sleep in bring something to cover the window. The building itself is fairly noisy so if you want a quiet night's sleep bring a pair of ear plugs. Good for an over night stay and grand for backpacking:)

I actually have stayed here with friends in April 2010 (I had to choose a date and the latest tripadvisor allows is April 2011) and I will never go back. The room had a damp/musty smell besides other bad smells we couldn't identify, the carpet was dirty and the bathroom besides tiny (hardly one person fits there), it was falling apart. The shower had one button where you had to keep pressing for the water to come out. Imagine trying to wash a long hair like that! The shower curtain was moldy and it didn't seem to be washed in ages. The ceiling had holes and rust.
Breakfast was poor in quality and quantity.
They do have a big kitchen in case you want to cook yourself, but the smell to old grease made me want to vomit.
Service and staff weren't that amazing either.
Maybe the one good thing about it is the location.
I do not recommend this place.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else.

Head line : location in heart of Dublin, anywhere walking distance, we didn´t use bus and save our money.
Price : low, simply breakfest and wi-fi included, AvH saving money again :-)
Friendly staff, lively atmosphere, I returned to my student years, it was very refreshing :-)))

But walls are thin in this building (many small rooms for visitors) and rooms are very noisy. Someone gets up early in the morning to bus station/airport and you get up with him :-(((((

Traveling with a family of five, I chose Avalon House purely for financial reasons and hoped for the best, having never stayed in a hostel previously. It's located in the heart of the city and quite an easy walk to just about anywhere you might want to go. The facilities were clean, the staff friendly and very helpful. Free breakfast and wifi were a plus too. I would highly recommend Avalon House to anyone visiting Dublin.

I spent 2 nights at this hostel and was unimpressed. My room was very dirty when I arrived, with tons of trash lying all over. I stayed in room 111, which is a 12 bed dorm. There was trash under my bed as well, including a condom. Some guys had essentially moved in to the room, they'd been there for a couple weeks, and had taken over most of the space. They were the source of the trash.

The kitchen was not very clean and was a bit run down- the hot water machine was broken. A staff member came in several times while I was cooking dinner one night and shouted at everyone to clean up after themselves. Other than that, the staff were friendly and fairly professional.

I tried to do laundry, but it took an hour and a half to dry my light load. If you stay here, don't plan on doing laundry. It costs 1 euro for just 10 minutes on the dryer, and the woman at the desk gave me a refund of only 3 euro, despite the 9 euro I put in the machine total!!

The bathrooms were pretty gross. My shower drain was clogged somewhere in the pipe- I couldn't clear it- so my shower flooded the floor. The bathrooms are supposed to be checked several times per day, but I don't believe it, judging by the number of clogged toilets. However, the toilets in the basement are much cleaner.

Breakfast was nothing special. It consists of museli, cornflakes, white or wheat bread, butter, jam, and tea or instant coffee. I've had much better hostel breakfasts at hostels that charged a fraction of the price Avalon charges for a bed.

The locks on the lockers are difficult to manage. It takes a lot of effort to get them relocked, and they charge you 1 euro per day plus a ten euro deposit to use the lockers.

The website implies that they have adapters to loan out, but you have to buy them. They're 3 euro.

I would not recommend Avalon House to anyone.
