“A Good Base”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2011

We stayed here on a Friday night at the beginning of July, after having stayed elsewhere in Ireland. We had originally booked a double ensuite room at Kinlay House but were later contacted & advised that our booking had been transferred to Avalon House as Kinlay was overbooked. Despite being a little further out we were happy to change. The hostel is in a good location on Aungier Street, surrounded by some nice bars & restaurants & a 5-10 min walk from Temple Bar.

We had a twin ensuite room that was on the top (4th floor). The room had bunkeds and a small kitchen area (cupboards, sink & 2 hobs – although nothing to cook with but imagine you could have borrowed from the kitchen downstairs). The room also had a balcony & ensuite toilet & shower. The shower was ok but like one at a swimming pool as you had to press the button every 9 seconds to keep the water flowing. It was pretty hot though so did the job. The hostel has everything you would need – a communal kitchen (noodles etc available to buy from reception although quite a few supermarkets nearby also), pool/games room, free wifi access & pcs in the lobby, big/small lockers for hire (€1 a day plus deposit) and a cheap café that serves good coffee & food. We also had breakfast included (served until 10am) but were so tired we didn’t bother. The only downside of here is that checkout is at 10am which we thought was a tad too early. All in all, this was a good base & would stay here again.

The hostel is in the city centre not too far from Temple Bar. This is a big hostel, so it wasn't all that conducive to meeting people if that's what you're looking for. The showers turned off every 90 seconds and the rooms weren't that clean. It was also hard to get on a computer, internet was slow - which is fairly common to most hostels I've seen On the upside, there was a nice big kitchen and the front desk was helpful.

We stayed here last weekend, for my birthday with my boyfriend. On arrival at the hostel I found the staff to friendly and willing to help with maps or places to visit. The break out area and kitchen are littered with posters advertising trips, free walks etc and if we had been there longer would have definitely visited some of the places mentioned.

The hostel is in a perfect location, around 5/10 mins walk from the main drinking area Temple Bar. There is a supermarket near the hostel, but I would recommend visiting Dunns a little further as it has more choice and a lot cheaper.

We had booked a private room on the third floor, which had two bunk beds. The beds were clean and the room was tidy with a sink and place to hang clothes. The showers were located at the end of the hallway. There was about 4or 5 showers and toilets and never seemed to be a queue.

I was impressed with the kitchen facilities although a horrid shade of orange, there were 3 or 4 ovens, hobs, kettles and microwaves - plenty of space for a few people to cook.
The best thing about the hostel was definitely the location and the friendly staff. We were due to check out on Sunday morning but were going to a gig and our flight wasn't until Monday morning at 6am. The staff allowed us to use their locker room facilities even though we were not booked in for the night and for us to come back at 2am to collect them!
Only one thing is breakfast was literally cereal and toast with water and coffee and the paid food which looked delicious was a bit of a tease as it was served next to the free breakfast, but it looked reasonably priced!

I'm not big on staying in hostels really, but this one was actually OK! We had a double room with ensuite to ourselves, and it was pretty cozy. We got free breaky every morning which was very basic (ie weetbix & toast). I was pretty happy with our shower - it was a push button one but had adequate pressure & warmth. We were able to easily walk to places like Temple Bar, Trinity College & Dublin Castle, so got to see enough of Dublin. Free wifi also a bonus. Definitely happy with my hostel experience

This hostel was, to our taste, average. I stayed with a friend in a private room (with no view) and the room was really tiny! Fortunately Dublin has a lot to offer, so we didn't spend much time in it. The bathroom was smelly for some reason, but it was reasonably clean and the shower was warm. The staff was pretty helpful in booking trips for us and got us a hairdryer and such.
The breakfast was horrible, but the bar next to the 'breakfast' buffet had good sandwiches and pastries. This man made a good move to place his bar right next to this poor breakfast buffet! But if you're on a budget, do not expect to have good breakfast.
The location was great, close to many sights and shopping area. The tourbus we took to Glendalough even picked us up from the hostel.
Price is reasonable for what you get.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else for a private room!

I was looking for a cheap place to stay in Dublin without giving up good location.
The Avalon House was perfect. I was there for my 1st three nights in Ireland & my last night. I experienced no problems. The location was great. The price was right. Plenty of hot water for the shower. Staff was helpful & polite. My bedding was clean. They even had a lift which is useful if you have heavy luggage. I'd stay there again without hesitation.

I arrived at the hostel at 12pm but we could not go to our rooms till 2pm as the 26 bedroom doorm we booked was not ready for us. we decided to go and get something to eat and then return back to the hostel. when we saw our room for the first time it was like something out of Annie the musical! 13 bunk beds, bars accross the ceiling, dirty duvets, no windows, mirriors and very smelly! The 3 men in there beds were staring at us as we were giggling at the site of this room and making a tad bit of noise but not much. I was meant to be staying here for my hen do but deffintely not if we were just getting dirty looks for laughing at 2pm!!!This place was absolutely disgusting and i would not recommend this place to anyone! we checked into The morgan which was BEAUTIFUL.deff recommend the morgan, NOT avalon/!
