“Use of on board kennel on ferry sailing between Holyhead-Dublin”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2014

Used this service for the first time recently. Only when on board did I find out that a padlock was required to be used to secure the kennel door once dog was inside it. Informed by crew member that I could hire one from customer service desk for £5 (refundable). This was not a problem it's just it would have been useful to know via the Irish ferries website!

Unfortunately 2 male crew members had a very bad attitude towards me about this and insisted this information was made available via the website. Just checked Irish Ferries website again before writing this and still no mention of use of a padlock.

“Irish Ferries - in general”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2014

It's hard to review Irish Ferries because the delivery is so different across the various routes. The Irish Sea routes tend to be pretty basic where the service is much like a low-cost airline: brusque, efficient, not too many rough edges if you know what to expect, and complete with expensive food. The French routes on the Oscar Wilde also differ according to the class of cabin you book. At the bottom end, the inexpensive cabins are fine if you want to minimize expenses and are tolerant of noise and cramped conditions. In this case you'll probably also bring on your own food and wine and not bother with any of the restaurants on board, some of which are guilty of serving over-priced food. At the top end, the five star cabins are very nice and offer the luxury of a full-size bed, a couch that also transforms into a bed if needed, a living area, some fruit and drinks, and an included breakfast. It's a completely different traveling experience that will attract those who don't mind spending a little extra because it makes the overnight trip into more of a holiday. It also means that you arrive refreshed, something that isn't always the case with the more cramped cabins. You can drop lots of money on board in the restaurants (the Berneval has upped its game slightly in the last year or so but it's still EUR36.95/ head for an evening meal), bars, slot machines, shopping, coffee shop, and so on. But it's your choice...

“Room for improvement”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2014

Having taken many ferries, we know that the ferry trip can be a true part of your Holiday instead of "something you have to endure until it is over". Unfortunately we perceived two trips with Irish Ferries (France-Ireland vice versa) poorly.
Some examples: terribly inefficient and lenghty boarding procedure (5 hours waiting in car in 40 degrees and no access to toilet or information when we would be able to board), no satisfactory possibility to upgrade to avoid masses, bar at sundeck closes already at 17h and limited choice of food & drinks. Annoying: bandwith of WiFi far too small so in practise WiFi not usable. Positive point is the friendliness of the staff, the clean cabin and the chicken wings in the little restaurant!

“Perfect way to travel from Wales to Dublin”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2014

My daughter & I travelled from Wales into Dublin on this one way leg of our vacation. The drop off for our rental car was in the same terminal as the check in for the ferry, so dropping our car was a breeze. The ferry allowed us to check our suitcases, which freed up the space on the passenger deck. The passenger area was very clean & comfortable with lots of window seats and different seating arrangements. There really is no need to pay extra to be in the first class section upstairs. The staff cleared away our table even though we had brought our own lunches with us, we appreciated this special bit of attention. What a wonderful option to flying!!
