“Friendly and central”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2012

Fitzwillian Townhouse is the perfect place to stay if you are on a business trip, or you want to be central but in a quiet area. It is in a safe area and near plenty of shops, lots of taxis about.
Very reasonable compared to other hotels in the D2 area. Probably not best for large groups, but perfect for couples.

Rooms are clean, warm, simple, with everything that you could need. You also get a taste of Georgian Dublin which you don't in the more modern hotels! A very pleasant experience.

Very friendly and helpful staff and 24hr service, and close to the lovely vegetarian restaurant Govinda's!

I would definitely return on my own or with my partner, as it is quiet, and makes a change from the usual hotel or hostel travalling experience.

Room Tip: Rooms on the street might get some noise from traffic, but not too much.

I recently stayed at Fitzwilliam Townhouse for four nights. It was fine, but I probably wouldn't stay again. The good: It was well-located, walking distance to Marrion Square and St. Stephen's Green, but far enough to avoid street noise. The staff was very friendly. Breakfast at Isabel's Restaurant in the basement was a surprising highlight (though not included in room price). The bad: Room was pretty small with minimal storage. Shower was teeny tiny (though it had good water pressure.) Toilet was constantly running, and the seat was really loose (moved back and forth when you sat on it). Bed only had a super hot comforter and no top sheet, so you could either be boiling or cold. Hard pillows. Carpet was very worn and dirty.

Fitzwilliam Townhouse is a good place to sleep when you visiting Dublin and don't want to spend to much mony for a nice and fancy hotel. The hotel has a lot of stairs (and not any elevator). It take approximately 10-15 minuts to walk to the shopping area. Its not to noisy (even with the window open.

I stayed for 5 nights at the Fitzwilliam Townhouse. I followed a suggestion in a travel guide and was satisfied with it. I was in Dublin for the theater festival and the location was within walking distance of everything worth visiting in Dublin. There is a park (Marrion) close by if you are running/jogging. It is a buiding in the Georgian quarter, and everything is comfortable and functional. Staff was very helpful.

A very good value for the city and location. The rooms are clean and comfortable and the staff very friendly and helpful. It is easily accessible from the airport by bus, right on the city transit line making public transportation simple. Occasional use of Taxis was a good assist to the regular city buses. Although within walking distance to many popular sites, it is separate enough for quiet retreat from the late night noise. The restaurant below, "Isabel's", is superior for breakfast or dinner. It has a wine cellar looking decor with superbly prepared and presented food a great wine collection and a delightful, friendly owner.

Room Tip: Second floor front rooms had good street view.

When we stayed at Fitzwilliam Townhouse, we stayed for 2 nights. It was reasonable in price, and it was quiet...except for the toilets running. There were toilet malfunctions in 3 out of 3 rooms. They did allow us to move after one night, then required us to move back after the plumber came the next night. Might have been a conincidence, but we will not stay there again.

We spent two nights here and loved the location. It is in the Georgian Quarter so easy to walk to many interesting places and good restaurants. The building is old and we think they are in the process of fixing it up. The carpets in the common areas are new as was the carpet in our room. The room was clean and looked attractive. However, the window sill needed paint so badly that it had separated from the bottom molding - so probably had not been painted recently - and there were cracks in the corners of the walls/wallpaper. The mattress on one of the beds was swayed down and, after sleeping one night in it, one of us switched to the other bed which was in better shape.

We had two main problems with this hotel. We are non-smokers and the room had a sign thanking us for not smoking. However, something shares the vent system with this room, #41, so it smelled slightly of smoke when we entered for the first time. I opened the window and vented it. By the evening the bathroom smelled strongly of smoke so we were forced to keep the fan/ceiling light running all night to prevent it from coming into the sleeping area of our room. Second, the first morning we attempted to take a shower around 8 AM but there was no hot water. We were told the water had been used up already by others and to try again later. When we did take a shower in the middle of the afternoon, the water would change from warm to cool and back again about every few minutes. The shower was also on the small side but not a problem for us as we are not large people.

Be aware that because it is a historic building, there is no elevator and they are not allowed to put one in. You will need to carry your luggage up to your room. We are fit and this was easy for us but for some, this could be a problem.
