Difficult to rate this hotel. You could have a great time or a miserable time depending on when you stay and what room you're in. Read the 'poor' reviews carefully as many of the complaints are justified.

This is a really busy, touristy hotel with coaches as well as locals using its bars and facilities. So many people to cater for makes meal times a bit of a circus.Coach loads of tourists are shuffled into a number of restaurants and function rooms with a 'get -'em-in-get -'em - out' type of procedure. It won't suit everyone.(The bar doubles as a pub-grub place for locals so it's not ideal for people used to pleasant food-free areas between meals.)

The rooms are pleasant enough but what's been said about noise is VERY important. My wife and I stayed here for four nights commencing on a Sunday. We were lucky as the early part of the week is the QUIET part. (No night club) However,we DID experience the racket other guests have complained about on one night.......and believe me, - you ain't going to sleep through it ! The square outside the hotel fills with revellers to equal anything you've experienced in your worst nightmare. And it goes on 'til about three or four am.
So the secret is to try for a room at the back facing the river.....as long as it isn't that one with the 'generator'.....or '313' with the wonderful view of a flat roof and two massive extractor fans.

It's all a bit of a gamble. WE enjoyed it...but others in our party didn't. The Irish music entertainment nightly is great...but can be enjoyed better a couple of doors down the road in the Central Hotel where a simulated 'proper' Irish bar does a better job of it all. I would not recommend staying here for most people.

We booked in for two nights with a child and an infant the following is a summary of what we experienced:
A cot was requested 1 x month prior - Never got a cot
Had to request an ironing board and iron - 45 minute wait
No fridge in the room
Requested a fridge - 1hr wait then I went down to reception to get it myself and was given a moulded fridge that just about held 2 x babies bottles and 12 cubes of ice! The noise from this shoe box of a fridge was like having a hair dryer blowing all night.
No room service for breakfast (requested)
A television with a snowy reception
There was one good thing...
We check-out and left, never to return and would not recommend it to anyone.

“EVERYTHING THAT IS WRONG WITH IRISH COUNTRY HOTELS”

The Abbey

THE Abbey sums up pretty much everything that is wrong with Irish hotels.
We booked in for a friend's wedding which was held on a Saturday.
The first problem was that the car park is actually a good 200 yard walk away from the hotel. This wasa major problem as we had suitcases to carry plus our baby - not exactly a relaxing start to the visit.
When we initially booked the hotel two weeks before arriving I gavce all my credit card details as normal and they said the booking was now secure.
Three days before arriving my wife called to confirm the room and they had no record of our visit - not even my name. I had to call and re-book the whole thing.
The room was pleasant enough and had two big beds and TV. But we notcied there was no child cot in the room despite having specifically requested this before we arrived.
When we checked in they said a child cot was already in the room but this was not the case. It took a further FOUR phone calls to reception to finally get the cot brought up (by this stage the baby was extremely tired and irratable). During each of the phone conversations they said the cot was on its way, yet it took 35 minutes for it to appear.
The rest of the night was fine as we were at the wedding. But the breakfast the next morning was pretty pathetic. Think loads of fatty slodge pilled on a plate and covered in a ladle full of beans and you're there. So my breakfast was over beofre it began - thanks to a so-called chef dumping beans and rich sauce all over the top of my whole breakfast. My wife's brekkie ended a few minutes later when she discovered egg shell in her scrambled egg. We both agreed to grab something on the road that had a bit more thought put into its preparation.
Also they only serve breakfast till 10am on a Sunday which is bizarre indeed. They keep their bar open till 4am on a Saturday night yet expect everyone to be be up and finished their breakfast by ten?
After checking out we then had that horrible 200 yard walk in the rain back to the car park (which is actually a car park for everyone in the twon to use).
The Abbey isn't the worst place in the world but it is typical of many hotels in Ireland that employ kids to do all the donkey work and asa result really sacrafice standards and service levels.

Booked in to the Abbey for two nights. First impressions good although the lack of car park is a big disadvantage. The hotel is busy with a good atmosphere in the bar, lounge and foyer. Rooms were very old fashioned, blankets on beds were stained as was the carpet. Fusty smell in room. Checked out after one night due to noise which went on all night. Wouldn't recommend if you have children with you or enjoy a bit of luxury when you are away.

basically a good, solid, comfortable hotel. check in efficient but parking is a huge problem. rooms are above average for a 3 star but noise from younger club goers a bit frustrating at 4am!!!my only grip was the price...a bit steep for a 3 star considering the nearby millpark (4 star) is cheaper.however, you are probably paying for the location, which is great and right on the diamond. would recommend without hesitation.
