“Nice bar shame about the rooms”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2006

Booked in to the Abbey for two nights. First impressions good although the lack of car park is a big disadvantage. The hotel is busy with a good atmosphere in the bar, lounge and foyer. Rooms were very old fashioned, blankets on beds were stained as was the carpet. Fusty smell in room. Checked out after one night due to noise which went on all night. Wouldn't recommend if you have children with you or enjoy a bit of luxury when you are away.

basically a good, solid, comfortable hotel. check in efficient but parking is a huge problem. rooms are above average for a 3 star but noise from younger club goers a bit frustrating at 4am!!!my only grip was the price...a bit steep for a 3 star considering the nearby millpark (4 star) is cheaper.however, you are probably paying for the location, which is great and right on the diamond. would recommend without hesitation.

Just back from a 2 night break at The Abbey.
The goods...........
Check in very efficient
Staff friendly and helpful
Food was very good with ample portions at reasonable price
Drinks at typical hotel prices
Leisure facilities next door free except for solarium
Good entertainment and atmosphere in bar

Not so goods........
Parking is 100m down the street in pay and display although hotel gives a free parking ticket.
Hotel has a nite club at weekends. Can't hear noise from club but when it closes there is a lot of noise from people going to their rooms. We were woken by the first group of revellers around 2am and this continued till 4am. These groups of lads then make a noisy appearance at breakfast reliving the antics of the night before using colourful language. Not the sort of thing you want to listen to over breakfast.

Overall..........
Nice place, enjoyed the break but wouldn't stay there on a saturday night again.

My husband and i had a 3 night stay in the abbey and where do i start?
On arrival we were given a 3 course meal of blended soup, fish in batter and whipped potatoes and veg ..pudding was ice cream from the nearest freezer shop. The hotel itself was very nice the decor was lovely the staff very pleasant and the room was one of the best i ve been in ..but our outlook was the back of the hotel and there was a generator that ran nearly all nite...quite noisy. The breakfast was nice but not enough of it ..then we came to the next night, dinner was blended soup whipped potatoes ,beef or fish in batter and freezer shop gateaux or apple pie the following nite was turkey and ham with whipped potatoes but i thought no i can t have this again and i asked for chips which i was happy with ,then there was fish and batter if you did nt fancy the turkey.
There is a thai restuarant attached to the hotel that you can go into and say you are from the hotel and for 2 euros extra you can get a lovely meal but we did nt find that out till the morning we were coming away .I enjoyed donegal but if i went again i would go self catering as the abbey hotels meals left a lot to be desired ,infact this hotel would suit over 65s who have dentures, they would manage the evening meal no bother

What can I say that you have to go to find out how good it is. We had arrived on a Sunday and had entertainment for the three nights we stayed. Staff were wonderful, food was great and rooms are lovely. Will be going back for more fun. Can be busy on Saturday nights with disco but we loved it.

just returned from our first Irish holiday. The Abbey hotel was our first sample of Irish hospitality, and we could not fault it in any way. well maybe one way- the food was too good and the helpings too big [ weightwatchers here we come ]. The bar and restaurant staff . were most helpful and efficient. Congratulations to you all, and many thanks from a delighted couple.

just back from a 3 day midweek break staying in the Abbey hotel. The hotel is in a great location in donegal town. Good size bedroom and ensuite. Hotel overall was clean and tidy. We had breakfast each day and it was of a high standard as was the evening meal we had in the dining room. Staff are very pleasant and go out of their way to be helpful. Entertainment was in the bar/lounge at night and again this was good. I would stay here again and have no hesitation recommending it to anyone alhtough I have been told that the bedrooms near the nightclub can be very noisy at the weekends.
