“Seen Better Days!”

The Abbey

Jul 4, 2008

Booked 2 double rooms as staying 2 nites with husband, mother and 3 children. Rooms very disappointing indeed - dirty, sticky carpeting throught, nicotine smell pervaded whole room. Outer quilt on beds smelt of greasy mens' hair and did not appear to have been washed in some time. Grubby, tired bathrooms and very poor tv reception. Staff surly to say the least. Typical breakfast of its kind. Leisure centre a hike thru a maze of corridors and car park a good walk from reception (not good when raining). Don't stay here if u want service with a smile. We won't be going back.

My wife and i stayed at the Abbey on a 5 day trip with National Holidays. It was during St Patricks Day so we expected a lively time, and yes that is what we got. The hotel was the centre of the town and was full of locals at night as there was 4 bars and 2 night clubs inside. We were on the 3rd floor , the room was quiet clean and spacious. There was no view but it was only for sleeping in. People did say that it was noisy on the 1st and 2nd floors from the nightclub but you could move if you were not happy. The staff were very friendly and helpfull. The food was very good .Live music nightly, also every local bar had their own live music.would go back again

I just showd up a Friday morning, and ask for a single room for one night. They said their special Friday offer is 60 euros, and I accept it straight away,as I was really tired to look around for a room, and location of the hotel is perfect. At first I thought it's pricey, but no,it was great value for money. My room was HUGE, clean, and seemed to be recently renovated. Breakfast (included in the price) was very good, and I 've pay more money for rubbish hotels comparing to this one in Ireland. I had to travel on public bus,and it stops exactly outside the door. Room was very quiet though! I'd really like to be back in this hotel!

Our room was spacious with very smart furniture & a lovely bathroom. We had a beautiful view down the river. Our shower wasn't working properly on arrival & they fixed it immediately. The staff were very hard working & gave an excellent service. We went for St Patrick's Day celebrations so didn't expect it to be quiet. Instead of trying to sleep we joined in & caught up during the day or early evening. We'd certainly recommend the Abbey Hotel as we loved staying there. It's massive with so much going on & very welcoming.

Lovely hotel - we had a great weekend here. I was prepared for worse, to be honest when we arrived after reading the reviews, and I could wholeheartedly agree with most of the comments - I guess it depends on the purpose of the weekend as to how these would bother you.
The parking is indeed a good stroll away - was prepared for it, so we unloaded out luggage at the door and my husband parked whilst we checked in - no major inconvenience. We were given a third floor room which wasn't really up to scratch though. The carpet was grubby and manky, the bath didn't entice you to get into it, the furniture looked a bit worse for the wear, and there was a noisy generator out side- the rest of our group were two floors down, and we can't complain, as they let us move rooms. the rooms on the first floor were much nicer - they had new carpet and the bathroom was much fresher. We also had a nice, quiet view of the river. Much better!
We had great fun in the bar - there was lively live entertainment, and we all (a group of couples in our twenties and thirties) really enjoyed our stay - the restaurant wasn't bad (the meal on the second night was particularly good), we had a lovely breakfast, and most of the staff were nice. Have to say though that I wouldn't have been impressed had I wanted an early night - our room was almost vibrating with the music from the live band in the bar and the DJ playing at the wedding - but they were all packed up by the time we went for bed.
Wasn't impressed though with the lack of hot water - couldn't get a shower or wash my hair before going out on the Saturday night, and there was a plumber making one hell of a racket on the Sunday morning. For this raeson, I have given it an average rating. But all in all, it was better than I thought, and I may even go back sometime.
