On 3rd Sept 2012 I brought a group of 25 Club members on a 4 day trip to Donegal and stayed at Harveys Point Hotel. When we arrived by hired Coach from Dublin there was a slight shower of rain falling. However, there to meet and greet us were the friendly staff of Harveys Point who held umbrellas over our heads and took our luggage in to the hotel for us.We saw no more rain for the rest of our trip. Our room keys were ready for us and we were each shown to our rooms by one of the Staff. That first impression made on our arrival was indicative of the way we were treated by everybody for the 4 days of our stay. Our rooms were incredible - comfortable and with tasteful decor. Meals were beautifully prepared and served. The whole experience in Harveys Point was so enjoyable that we would have loved to stay longer. However we will certainly be back again fairly soon.

I booked one night in this hotel (Sat 15th Sept 2012) through Travel Republic to celebrate my wife's birthday. I brought her with me this time. We arrived just before 4 pm. The room was not yet ready and we waited approx 20 mins before being shown to a room (no.416 to be precise) away from the main hotel. The room was large with a four poster bed but very dated and shabby in appearance. I doubt if it had been decorated since the hotel opened in 1989. The bathroom had a huge cobweb suspended from one side to the other. At first glance I thought it was a line for hanging clothes on to dry. The bath had clearly not been cleaned at all. There were dirty sticky marks at the shower end. It looked as if someone had taken a shower in a pair of muddy boots. The room had a sealable glass jar with a few cookies in it which had been left open. The furniture was worn and the carpet had a burn mark in the shape of an iron. The TV remote was held together (unsuccessfully) with black tape.
We identified these shortcomings to the receptionist who said that the room allocated to us would be out of commission in 3 weeks time but she was unable to offer us an alternative room as there were none available. A presumably more senior member of staff presented herself. Her first comment was that we had already been upgraded from a standard room and that if we had booked directly with them we would have been informed of the nature of the rooms. She then went on to complain about the commission the hotel had to pay to Travel Republic. As we had paid for the room (£126 sterling for bed and breakfast) via Travel Republic and there were no alternative rooms available this staff member had no further suggestions to deal with our complaint. We were on our way to dinner so I asked her in the meantime to have a think about our complaint and offer some resolution.
My wife and I were having dinner when another male staff member arrived and offered a complimentary bottle of wine by way of apology. He also said " we would like to invite you back to the hotel ". Naively I thought this might be an offer of free accommodation on another occasion. My wife was more realistic. The food was good (as you would expect at 50 euros per person without wine ) though not memorable. The desserts were particularly unimaginative -- Black Forest gateau may have come back into fashion but from the appearance of the menu it may never have been out of fashion at Harvey's Point.
On our return to our room the bath had been cleaned and the cobweb largely removed. A complimentary box of chocolates had been left with some flowers and a few strawberries.
When we checked out the following morning after a very good breakfast my wife spoke to the rather defensive staff member previously mentioned to clarify what was meant by her colleague's invitation to return to the hotel. Apparently this meant that when we booked again to stay at the hotel we would be upgraded. (Be warned: in future you may need to receive an invitation to stay at Harvey's Point). My wife said that we would not be returning to the hotel and would expect some alternative compensation for our less than 4 star experience. In response to this the staff member turned her back without a word and walked off. The receptionist however kindly removed our drinks bill from the invoice.
This was a disappointing experience and the room we stayed in was not 4 star standard (upgraded or otherwise) bearing no resemblance to the rooms advertised in the brochure. The hotel is in a lovely lakeside setting but there is little in the way of entertainment -- the inevitable acoustic guitar accompanied singer churning out a predictable batch of old songs on a Saturday night. You would have to drive to find a decent pub and there is no fitness centre or swimming pool. The hotel decor generally seemed tired and dated; all swags and tails, dark wood and terracotta. My advice would be to go to a modern city hotel and have a bit of fun unless of course you like nice walks followed by a doze beside the turf fire in which case this just might be the place for you.
I would also suggest that the staff member with the attitude be removed from the front of house or sent on a training course, something along the lines of " How to deal with Complaints in the Hospitality Industry" . Otherwise staff were very friendly and helpful.

Dear Jeremy, Thank you for taking the time to share your comments in relation to your recent visit to Harvey's Point. The Gysling Family & Team sincerely regret that you had a negative experience in our hotel and for this, may I extend our genuine apologies. I accept your points and clearly we will be conducting a thorough investigation into this serious matter. Yes, the Courtyard rooms are in need of renovation and we are dealing with this in the coming weeks. Yes, it is difficult to translate the different room types to a third party website and no, it is not the norm at Harvey's Point for this to happen. I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss this with you in person and I am contactable at anytime on 087 7934466 or at deirdre@harveyspoint.com.

From the moment we arrived at Harvey's Point it was a most enjoyable experience. I found the staff to be welcoming and helpful.

After checking in we were shown to our room and given a tour of the room. The room was beautiful, the bed was extremely comfortable and everything we needed was in the room. The bathroom was spacious and the bath and shower really nice, skin feels great after the bog water too!! We commented that it's the first time that we had ever stayed anywhere that the actual room was better than the pictures on the website.

We were attending a wedding at the hotel and this was our reason for the stay. The meal at the wedding was faultless and very tasty. We had breakfast the following morning, there was a great selection of foods and again very tasty.

We rang and asked for a late checkout and the hotel were happy to accommodate us for an extra hour, which was great to have before a long drive home.

The setting was beautiful and we enjoyed a walk around the lake and grounds before heading home.

Finally we will definitely return for another stay at this hotel (hopefully for longer than one night next time). We did not want to leave and found that despite the fact we had a 3 and a half hour drive to the hotel for a wedding and a late night, we left feeling extremely relaxed and revitalised,

Some years ago, while researching a possible holiday in Ireland (but not Donegal specifically at that stage), I first noticed the consistently positive (even rave) reviews of Harvey's Point. The hotel continued to generate great comments from guests - with an occasional, but extremely rare, negative comment which was so out of kilter that I regarded them as totally inconsequential. Could all the remarkably positive comments about the wonderful accommodation, superb food, lovely location, very friendly staff and excellent WiFi really ALL be true? After four nights at Harvey's Point last week the answer is YES. All the boxes were ticked. Among the many genuinely nice and friendly staff were Sean, Nancy, Sennan and Eamon. The unexpected bonus was the professional cabaret dinner. The local young Irish dancers were magic and the singer Eugene Ginty was very entertaining - what a great voice - and funny! A must do if you stay at Harvey's Point. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

AS this is first time we stayed at Harveys Point we were really impressed with service, staff, food and accommodation. When we arrived we were pleasantly Upgraded to the Penthouse Suite which was fabulous.Itwas so luxurious with all the little trimmings which added to our romantic stayThe jacuzzi went down a treat with candlelight and piped music in the background which added to the ambience.Food including breakfast, and dinner was excellent quality and all staff were so pleasant. As it was a gift from our newly married Daughter and Son -in-law it was so greatly appreciated. We loved the Turf and stick fires alsowhich added more warmth to the environment. It was lovely to watch the friendly duck outside the dining room and the swans and their young. We had a delightful cycle ride round the lake and would most certainly love to partake in more activities.Staff were very pleasant and fresh fruit and water offered to us on departure. As we have travelled to many countries around the world i would recommend Harveys Point among one of the best we have stayed in and would certainly like to return again. Bath robes, slippers etc were provided which is of great benefit and cuts down on packing you own.Thankyou all again for making our stay most pleasant and memorable.
