€60 B&B on a Saturday night in the center of Donegal town on a festival weekend… ok price €50 would have been more appropriate. Room small and very dated. Shared toilet, shower room was clean. Double glazed windows not worth a damn… so noisy outside, bed uncomfortable, hardly slept so just as well breakfast (before 9.30am) was nice. So after breakfast about 9.15/25, seeing as check out wasn’t until 11am, we went back to bed to try and get a bit more sleep. At 10.20 we get up and started pottering around the room and packing. My partner heads off to shower. At 10.30 there is a knock on the door and a female voice asking if we were checking out today, because check out was at 11am. I said yes, we are and we know. So my partner returns and I head off to the same. I return 5mins later, throw on clothes and finish packing.
After 13years in hotel management I know how important it is to have people out on time. However, never have I ever had anyone knock on my door before check out, to tell me that check out was in a half hour. Now, to my horror at 10.59 the door handle starts moving, (someone was coming in), as the person holding it knocks on the door … it was locked, I was shocked, we were literally in the process of picking the bags off the bed. I called “YES, Coming!!!”… My partner looks at me, and we really were horrified. When I open the door, I could see no one. We made my way down the stairs, my partner to the car and I to pay the bill. When I got down, there was no one to be seen. I called out and no one came. Another couple came down and the woman of the house came out, greeting them with smiles. However my welcome contained no smiles. I was asked for the remaining balance, and told goodbye… No enquiry as to how was the stay/breakfast etc, no call again… I really was taken aback. Later as we sat and chatted we wondered, my partner and I, wondered if it was anything to do with the fact that we were a same sex couple… So I will not return, or recommend and I will not be envious of the smiles that were sent home with the ‘Normal’ couple.
Do Not... Go to the Abbey or Central Hotel...
