This property is ideally placed for enjoying the delights of Cork city and its vibrant night life , yet is definitely nowhere near four stars and would be lucky to get three if not for the enthusiastic and hardworking staff who do a great job despite being in a dated, higgledypiggidy and in places ,clearly dated hotel showing many signs of wear!
Reception is welcoming and pleasant yet the five minute wait for the room turns into more than an hour, althoughh bar area is relaxing and easy on the eye with good view and good food.
Now... what a todo to get to your room up some faded carpeted stairs with a broken platform lift, a family struggles with a buggy, along a concrete corridoor akin to below decks on a ferry, into a dodgy lift with a serious time delay and another trek along a corridoor of a somewhat newer and pleasing construction.
The room is ok, clean good decor, good view over Cork yet meaness and lack unfolds ,Dodgy small Tv and pay internet that is pitifully slow..yet free in reception area. Adequate hanging space yet no drawer space yet this is not insurmountable.Bed is nearing retirement and could do with a change and one pillow seems to be the recipient of an awful lot of Olbas oil!!! So ..it will be a healthy stay at least!!! Maybe after all the travelling a hot shower? No chance as the water is cold to tepid and stays so till the following afternoon.Be careful of the toilet seat , a bit like a fairground ride with a life of its own and it refuses to flush.Anyway there is only one towel even though we ask for a second and we get a repeat on day two but as the shower is cold there is no need for it really! After all the excitement it would be good to sit down but there is no chair , yet in fairness this is soon rectified by helpful staff.
After the fist night it is obvious the room is colder than desirable and the cleaners leaving the window open all day doesnt help matters on our return.
So maybe a trip to the leisure centre to the tepid Jacuzzi and the severely overchlorinated pool and cramped slipperry skating rink of a changing room.Perhaps a hot steam in the steam room?Nope..it wasnt working. At least the hairdryers work and are hot and the mystery tour outside and back to the hotel reception is very invigorating.
Staff are charming and did do their best to rectify problems yet these should not exist in any hotel even a three star..no matter a four star and the problem with basic amenities are unforgiveable and unacceptable.Maybe we were just unlucky?
