The Shandon Bells B&B is FANTASTIC - the most friendly, accommodating couple and their lovely 15yr old daughter make you feel part of the family (if you want to), or leave you be if you prefer. GREAT LOCATION with a pub called Reidys just 2mins away that has won the award for Best Irish Pub just last year, with all home-made food and reasonable drinks too. Central Cork town is just a 10mins walk. University is 2mins away. CORK GAOL is extremely interesting and the old Radio Museum is there also - both a 10mins walk away. No need for a car here at all, as everything within walking distance, and buses outside if required. It did rain a bit while we were there this past week, but we were greeted back at the B&B to a lovely warm glowing fire in the lounge and a fresh cup of tea and Irish biscuits to welcome us 'home'. We had tears in our eyes when we left. Such warmth - in the B&B - and in their hearts. Just 10 rooms in the Shandon Bells, so try booking ahead of time. PS: Shame that one unkind person left bad feedback; but if you look at her other reviews, they are all put downs. Look at the photos on the other nice review from Canada. IT'S A SUPER PLACE!

Shandon bells!

It started okay with a nice welcome from the landlady but after that it went down hill.

we paid 80e for our double room which did not deserve it's description.

The room was tiny with the double bed jammed against one wall. To get out to the bathroom, involved somersaults over your partner the like of which I have not seen olga korbut perform. The bathroom, if posssible was even more miniscule and certainly not built for expanding waistlines. Perhaps, it is presumed that the somersaults will keep you in shape and allow you to fit.

Breakfast was okay - we ordered coffee and got tea! the bacon, sausage etc on the plate while well cooked were clearly bought on the managers special at the local lidl as they were of very poor quality.

we paid our 80e over and asked could we leave our car for a short while as we wanted to visit the university - this did not go down well and with strict warnings to only leave the car for a short time (it was 10am at this stage how many people did they think they would have checking in!) we departed. May the road rise with you! I don't think so - I hate to say it but this was a sad display of rip off ireland. Please visitors do not judge us all by this!

I'm glad to say that we travelled on to the excellent Caseys of Baltimore where my faith in the irish hospitality industry was restored

My new husband and I stayed here for the first few days of our Honeymoon. We found the staff overly friendly and willing to accommodate us in any way. The B&B wasn't overly fancy but comfortable and affordable. It is situated close to all points of interest in Cork City including St Fin Barre's Cathedral and downtown. Cork City is also a great place to stay if you have a rented a car as there are many day trips you can take. We did the Ring of Kerry, Cobh, Waterford and the Blarney Castle.
The breakfast that was served in the morning was very tasty and hearty. They had TVs in the rooms and complimentary tea & coffee as well. The bathrooms are small but they are small everywhere in Europe I found out.
If you want to visit Cork City and experience the more day to day living of Ireland, stay at a B&B. Moreover, stay at this B&B. Overall, my husband and I had a great stay and would recommend Shandon Bells to our friends/family.

Recently spent a night in the Shandon Bells B&B on Western Road in Cork City. Disaster. Avoid it at all costs. There is nothing wrong with the B&B really, although rooms are very basic but I've never encountered ruder people in my life. No attempt to be welcoming or polite and then the owner/landlady knocked on our door and told us we had to leave in 40 minutes. There was only one other couple in the place and we were ready to leave anyway.

Location is fine but if you don't want to look at a sour face on your trip, stay somewhere else.
