“Welcoming & friendly”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 1, 2012

The hotel was clean, warm and cosy. All the staff were welcoming, friendly and very helpful. As the hotel is in such a central location, the town centre with it's bars, restaurants and attractions are all a few minutes walk away. I would recommend the hotel and stay there again.

Having chosen Cork as a weekend trip i scrutinised all hotels and deals in the area and went with the Met for 89e per night incl breakfast and dinner. And i am very glad I did:
Firstly, took aircoach down and it stops at the back of the hotel on the Quay, so get off coach and walk up side of the hotel and your at your final destination. Simple.
checking in was no problem as i had advised them of our late arrival, and we were given room 302. I had enquired about rooms as the front of the hotel facing Issacs across the road gets the hustle and bustle of lively pubs whereas the back of the hotel can get traffic and the river, but the back is still old design. Saying that, thinking we have the modern design our bed was older than i hoped. the springs in it were playing a tune when we weren't even moving! I am not a fan of spring beds but we fell asleep naturally in the middle of the bed as thats the way the bed made you go! Room was grand and bathroom was very simple. BUT, the shower was ridiculous. Its a lovely rain shower, so not powerful but relaxing... but whoever put it in hadn't thought about distance from the wall. i was squashed up beside the wall above the plughole and the bath taps.. it was really stupid and i nearly slipped each day trying to get under the water flow..
Breakfast is simple in the back room. Not a fancy room just some where the kitchen is placed, but was filling, fry up in buffe style. Sausages, rashers, tomatoes, beans, pudding, eggs scrambled or fried, yoghurts, cereals etc. But a good way to start the day.
Dinner: first night we went straight into the restaurant (AKA breakfast room). No ambiance, no candles, very simple. You get three options of starts, dinner and dessert. Was ok. I got a couscous aubergine option and it wasn't great. they should have sued breadcrumbs to seal the aubergine.. (sorry getting too into it here)
YET.. on Saturday night we had been out all day and got back after 6pm only to find the restaurant fully booked. Not a woman to let a deal slip, i asked someone working in the restaurant in a suit called James, about this. He said he was sorry but we could eat in the bar instead with the menu. No problem we thought, he said we could have the full menu instead also.. Brilliant. He reserved us a table. When we went down as he said, we had the full menu to choose from and getting chicken wings for starters... it was like a whole meal, and very delicious! Lamb casserole was good too.. Its MUCH nicer to eat in there than being placed at a table beside others in a room that isn't warm. Choose bar!! (thank you James!)
The location is great, really superb as I saw the Clarion, Jurys etc and they are not in a great area, where as we were just on the river at the bridge with the main shopping street, so walked everywhere. (Note, the tourist office is around the corner.. the girl was hopeless in there.. skip is! she told us to go visit the butter museum.. we walked up only to find out it closed in October... )
All in all, i would go back, for price and location.. I came back and fell into my bed exhausted from the weekend, but finally to be able to get a good nights sleep in a proper bed!

Room Tip: There is a difference between the back and the front of the hotel... modern in front and meant to be...

I am disappointed to report that having returned to The Metropole in Cork last weekend that all is not as positive as my last review. We booked the same room on the fourth floor as last year because of the great view and again were not disappointed with that. The staff were friendly, welcoming and efficient. But the bedroom was cold, the corridor colder, the dining room draughty and the pool freezing and the cold air blowing down on the shower area didnt help! Other residents were complaining at check out about their room being cold and we mentioned the same experience but did not wait to speak to the manager as the others were doing so. The bathroom rad was off on arrival but we did turn it on. During the day all heat was off, and at some point during the night it went off again. Personally I do not like too much central heating but even I found this experience very uncomfortable.

Room Tip: Room 422 has a great view of the city over the bridge

We are just home from this hotel... And it was lovely..

When I was booking it I got upgraded to an Executive Suite. It was excellent value for money.

We arrived down and didn't know where to park. The lovely helpful girls and reception (1 with red hair Nd 1 with glasses) were really accommodating and pleasant. Car park is 2 seconds away walking.

Got to the room and we were thrilled. The bed was lovely and comfy. Shower was amazing. Couldn't wait to get into it. Telly was a super size for a hotel room. And all channels worked.

Went To the bar for food as we were starved and it was gorgeous. I had steak sandwich which get 10/10 in my book and my boyfriend had bangers and mash with onions and gravy and he loved loved loved it.

Used the pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi and they were lovely. All included in the room charge.

And check out was 12 And we didn't leave the room til 12.30 and no one annoyed u as they would in other hotels at 12.01!!

The whole experience was really enjoyable and we will defo be back...

Thank you Gresham Metropole,Cork.

I spent a Friday night at the Gresham Metropole in Cork with my boyfriend. We are both in our early 20s. The room cost €79 and we were told when we arrived that breakfast was not included-not happy as we were given the impression that it was.

We stayed on the 4th floor and we were honestly freezing all night. The radiators are controlled by the staff & only come on at certain times. Although a wooly blanket was provided, it was no where near enough considering how cold the weekend was.

Then we were woken up at 3am by the people staying on eitherside. We could hear them perfectly through the walls-one woman couldn't stop talking about how nice her meal was and how the bar next door lacked a nice mannered man...we heard the full thing like I said perfectly.

We had come to Cork from Waterford to do some christmas shopping. The location of the hotel is very good. Just a 5 min walk over the bridge to more or less everything & the girls on the reception desk were friendly.

Unfortunately, we wouldn't stay in the Gresham again as We had a terrible nights sleep with the paper thin walls & the room like a freezer!

We called ahead to request a room with a view, so were more than a little surprised to be sent to a room the size of a shoe-box whose window looked out directly on to....a brick wall. Only one elevator was working in a very busy hotel, so getting back down to the lobby, luggage and all, complaining, then back up to another slightly larger, not very nice room a mile and a half down a corridor, all took far too long.
The buffet breakfast was fine. They always are in Ireland!
The hotel neighbourhood felt rather dodgy although the shopping area was within easy walking distance. There must be better options in Cork for the same price.

Room Tip: Demand a river view!

A weekend treat with three of my sisters. We stayed two nights and loved every minute of our stay. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel reception was bright and welcoming. The rooms were clean and tidy. We did not spend much time in them. We enjoyed the leisure centre. The meals (appetising and well presented) and were served with a smile and gracious manner. We loved the short distance to the shops andfact we could park car on arival and know it was safe til departure time.. we will be back.

Room Tip: We overlooked the river very soothing.
