“Stunning staff make the difference”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2010

My wife and I decided to stay at the Maryborough in Douglas for a night after attending a wedding a few miles away.

Firstly the staff were excellent, especially Mairead on reception who was very helpful. We were actually upgaded to an executive room which made all the difference.

Room service was first rate, very quick and everything served with a smile.

The staff really couldn't do any more to be more helpful and considerate. They really made the difference and are a credit to the hotel.

The breakfast menu is lovely, with everything cooked fresh - from the usual full Irish to Eggs Benedict / Florentine. Real orange juice too.

The rooms were very comfortable and very quiet at night. Beds are really comfy.

Only negative is that we only stayed one night. I suspect we'l be back!

from check in the check out staff were extremly welcoming and helpful. the facilities including the spa were great and very relaxing. the grounds of the hotel were beautiful n peaceful adding to the country house feel! the room was very clean, the view from balcony as lovely touch and because the weather was good it was nice the sit out n relax. the only facility lacking in the room was a mini fridge! the breakfast catered for all from full irish to pancakes n fruit... Overall we had a very enjoyable stay.

Booked a weekend break in Maryborough Hotel & Spa & got good last minute deal. First impressions were good; it's a beautiful old house with lovely gardens. Reception in the main hall was compact and staff were very friendly and helpful. Once you check in, you spend the rest of your time in the new part of the hotel.

Rooms

After checking in we had to walk through the bar to the lifts - bedrooms are in a modern wing to the rear of the house. Our room was a standard double facing the garden - modern and clean, nice big bed. No toiletries provided apart from soap dispenser.

Restaurant

Food was good, not great. The dinner menu had a few duplicate dishes e,g 2 pork belly dishes (?!) and 2 stuffed chicken dishes. We had a 3-course meal as part of our package which was good value. Starters were average; “traditional French onion soup” was very disappointing - served in a canteen-style bowl with chunks of onion and small slice of bread floating on top. Duck spring rolls (3) were huge, far too much for a starter. Steaks were excellent and crème brulée was also very good. Breakfast buffet selection was very good, lots of fruit and nice croissants. Eggs benedict was poor.

Atmosphere

There were 2 weddings when we were there, and they totally took over the bar and garden area - this is probably normal for summer time but it definitely infringed on our weekend. All night there was a steady stream of wedding guests traipsing to and fro from the function room to the garden at the main bar to smoke. On both mornings, breakfast area was very busy and on the Sunday morning we joined a long Q for breakfast. This was compounded by guests (adults!) in their pyjamas in the dining area which, in my opinion, is not acceptable.

Spa

On balance I would say that the best part was the spa, which is über-modern. The thermal suites (separate for men and women) are small but very relaxing - treatment prices are, in my experience, above average.

From the moment we arrived at the Maryborough hotel, we had a wonderful time. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We had dinner that night which was delicious and then relaxed in our very spacious bedroom. Breakfast the next morning was amazing, anything you could wish for! Very nice relaxing stay overall. Only little thing was the rooms were very warm at night, but other than that I could not fault the place. Would definitley recommend and would def return in the future!

We would recommend the Maryborough Hotel without hesitation. It is suitable for all ages - families, couples, singles and older folk. The hotel is in a lovely woodland setting. Nice bedrooms, with comfortable and relaxing bar and restaurant areas. The leisure areas are second to none - very good gym, pool and spa. The staff are friendly and very helpful. Very nice food - lovely dinner and best breakfast ever in an Irish hotel. We enjoyed our stay and hope to return.

My husband and myself decided to stay at the Maryborough in Douglas for 2 nights for our wedding anniversary . Firstly the staff were excellent, especially Mairead on reception who was very helpful. We were actually upgaded by Carmel to an executive room for our anniversary , which made all the difference. The food was very nice too except that the restaurant is closed for most of the week so we had to have our evening meal in the garden room which is the bar area of the hotel and it was very uncomfortable. The bar itself was lovely but the seats were too low down and we actually felt ill when we went back to our room because of the way you have to sit when eating. Otherwise that is the only bad comment. The rooms were very comfortable and very quiet at night. The hotel had a wedding on while we were there but that didn't impede on our stay at all. We went to Kinsale which is only a 20-30 min drive and well worth a visit. The local Indian restaurant Lal Quila was excellent. We would definately stay here again.

We decided to venture south for a long weekend in the West Waterford and East Cork area, having stayed in several hotels along the way, we found the Maryborough Hotel & Spa to be the best of the trip. The location is very handy for Cork city and the N25, M8 route which we were taking, but the gardens and aspect of the hotel make it seem like we were in the heart of the countryside.
When we arrived our room was not ready so we had lunch in the bar. There was an excellent selection of food , it was tasty, good value for money and very good service.
In our package, entrance to the spa's thermal suites was included. This was excellent, very relaxing and comfortable although as the spa is divided into male and female suite we found it a bit lonely.
As the restaurant is closed Sunday night we had dinner in the bar. The dinner included in the package was a three course meal from the a la carte menu. Unlike some set menus there were no exclusions or supplemental charges. The food was of a very high standard, there was a large choice and the service was excellent. The choice and value of the wine list is also to be commended.
This quality of food and service was echoed the next morning when, after a short wait we were seated, given a varied choice of cooked breakfast which was served up to us in a timely fashion despite the busy time.
Over all it was the small touches; complimentary drinks in the room, room upgrade, excellent service and beautiful surroundings that would make me recommend the hotel and look forward to a return visit.
