I stayed one night in Jurys Inn Cork while on a business trip. In summary, the facilities in the hotel were just about OK, but didn’t impress me hugely. I didn’t get good value for money, having paid €85 for one night, plus €12 for breakfast.
My biggest complaint would be the musty smell in the room (room 101, ironically) , which was presumably cigarette smoke. I rang down to reception to ask if they had allocated me a smoking room, and I was told that ‘it is a non-smoking room tonight, but it used to be a smoking room’. This tells me that somebody just doesn’t get the basic rationale for having non-smoking rooms, as many non-smokers are sensitive to the smell of cigarette smoke, which inevitably works its way into curtains and carpets etc. Each time I entered the room, I was hit by this musty smell, which was just not pleasant.
I hit a couple of significant safety issues. First of all, the directions on the shower temperature control were reversed, so while the markings on the knob indicate clockwise movement to make it colder, this actually made the water hotter. This creates a serious risk of scalding, as the hot water was quite hot.
Also, when I took the long trek to find the ironing room on the 3rd floor, it had a push-button timer switch designed to make sure that the iron wasn’t left switched on. However, this push-button switch seemed to be stuck in the ‘on’ position, so it took me a few minutes to work out that I had to use the switch on the plug socket to switch on the iron. Therefore, there is always the chance that a customer may leave the iron plugged in, resulting in a risk of fire. I’m surprised that any ‘big name’ hotel chain would leave these kind of safety issues unresolved.
I found the room to be uncomfortably warm. In fairness, this was during a week of unseasonably warm weather. But there was no air conditioning, and the window could only be opened on a tilt, so there wasn’t really any flow of fresh air. At night, I couldn’t leave the window open as I faced out onto a busy street, so I just had to put up with the warm environment.
Otherwise, the room was OK and the general facilities in the hotel were OK. I felt bad about being charged extra for breakfast and for wifi access. Having paid €85 for accommodation, I’d expect these ‘extras’ to be included.
