“Facilities OK, but not great value for money”

Jurys Inn Cork

I stayed one night in Jurys Inn Cork while on a business trip. In summary, the facilities in the hotel were just about OK, but didn’t impress me hugely. I didn’t get good value for money, having paid €85 for one night, plus €12 for breakfast.

My biggest complaint would be the musty smell in the room (room 101, ironically) , which was presumably cigarette smoke. I rang down to reception to ask if they had allocated me a smoking room, and I was told that ‘it is a non-smoking room tonight, but it used to be a smoking room’. This tells me that somebody just doesn’t get the basic rationale for having non-smoking rooms, as many non-smokers are sensitive to the smell of cigarette smoke, which inevitably works its way into curtains and carpets etc. Each time I entered the room, I was hit by this musty smell, which was just not pleasant.

I hit a couple of significant safety issues. First of all, the directions on the shower temperature control were reversed, so while the markings on the knob indicate clockwise movement to make it colder, this actually made the water hotter. This creates a serious risk of scalding, as the hot water was quite hot.

Also, when I took the long trek to find the ironing room on the 3rd floor, it had a push-button timer switch designed to make sure that the iron wasn’t left switched on. However, this push-button switch seemed to be stuck in the ‘on’ position, so it took me a few minutes to work out that I had to use the switch on the plug socket to switch on the iron. Therefore, there is always the chance that a customer may leave the iron plugged in, resulting in a risk of fire. I’m surprised that any ‘big name’ hotel chain would leave these kind of safety issues unresolved.

I found the room to be uncomfortably warm. In fairness, this was during a week of unseasonably warm weather. But there was no air conditioning, and the window could only be opened on a tilt, so there wasn’t really any flow of fresh air. At night, I couldn’t leave the window open as I faced out onto a busy street, so I just had to put up with the warm environment.

Otherwise, the room was OK and the general facilities in the hotel were OK. I felt bad about being charged extra for breakfast and for wifi access. Having paid €85 for accommodation, I’d expect these ‘extras’ to be included.

I visited Cork at the end of May. After having too many pints of Murphy's I stumbled across Jurys Inn. That evening I had a wonderful experience talking with Lorin, Lorraine, and Nick. I went to Cork hoping to meet some friendly people and I was not having very good luck until I met these three. They made my experience in Cork very memorable. The next time I come to visit, I will stay at Jurys Inn. Thank you for a truly wonderful perception of Ireland.
Sincerely,
Tanya

“Great location... just ok.”

I have good and bad things to say about this hotel. The location of this hotel is GREAT, next to the river. Make sure you stay in a room with an " odd number" so you can have a river view.
You can see they were short of staff when the Food and beverage manager was checking people in. The hotel had a nice lobby with a nice bar/restaurant. The food was really good, but the service was really really bad. The bartender was not rude or anything like that but he will be gone for a while, so make sure you have a full drink before he goes wherever he goes. People were waiting for drinks (including me) for more that 15 minutes.
The room was very clean and the bathroom was comfortable, the bed was not. For all my American friends, if you are going in the summer, there is no AC...so get ready for hot a stay. Also there were no iron or iron board inside the rooms. I guess wrinkle is cool in Cork.
Did I mention we got charged 3 times, so be careful if using a check card.
The parking is free, but very small..so try not to move your car, if driving, until you leave. Walking is very safe around.

If driving to cork and you want to visit the Blarney Castle, I will go there first and then go to Cork to the Hotel. You will need a shower. YOU HAVE TO VISIT BLARNEY.

“Great location!”

A friend and I stayed at the Jury's Inn last month and really had a great time. The hotel was relatively easy to find and the check in process was fast and easy.

We arrived early and by luck they had just finished cleaning it so an early check in was no problem even though we didn't ask for it. The room itself was very clean. The bathroom was spotless. Our view overlooked the river and was gorgeous. The location couldn't be beat. We were within easy walking distance to everything we needed. Shopping, restaurants and bars were very close. The hotel bar was open late and had a very nice, friendly mix of people in it.

We didn't realize there were vending machines in the hotel until the 2nd night and that would have been very helpful information but it's our fault for not asking! We also had not brought an appliance adapter but the hotel was nice enough to loan us one they had.

The only downside we experienced was the rather small parking area in back. It holds approximately 20 cars and when it's full you have to find alternate parking. We just parked across the river and walked across the bridge back to the hotel. Will definitely come back to this fabulous and hospitable hotel.

Madison, WI

Our family of four stayed at the Jurys Inn Cork for two nights in March 2008. Our room had a queen size bed and a pull-out couch. The bathroom was large and clean.

After reading some of the reviews, we were worried that our stay would be spoiled by loud, late night revelers, especially since we were staying during the St. Patrick's Day holiday. I'm happy to report that our stay was pleasant and the only incident was when the occupant of the room next door came back to his room loudly singing an Irish ditty. Luckily this happened fairly early in the evening and he quieted down quickly. Traffic noise was somewhat irritating, but not overwhelming.

The hotel is located one block from the bus station and within easy walking distance of Cork's major shopping and tourist area. Our room looked out over the River Lee. On-site parking is minimal (only 20 spaces).

Breakfast was not included in our room rate, but was offered in a small restaurant in the lobby. It was somewhat overpriced for a buffet, but it was the only nearby option on a bank holiday. There was a coffee stand in the lobby right next to the bar, but it was never open during our stay. Front desk staff were friendly and helpful.

Overall, Jurys Inn was an economical, comfortable, and convenient location for our stay in Cork.
