“Great location, good food, almost self-service setup!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2013

The food here is good, expecially deserts, and you are looking down on the English Market. It is busy though, and you have to collect your food, pay and get your own water before you can find a table.

Better to avoid lunchtime and go for coffee and dessert

“Weekday sit-down lunch on a hot day”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2013

When we had lunch in The Farmgate on Monday it was busy, but service was not slow. Our server was very friendly, specifically telling us to 'relax for a bit, no rush' as we looked over the dessert menu. My husband and I both had chicken with lemon and herbs, with summery vegetables, and both really enjoyed it. It's simple food, well conceived and cooked. Value was great, as was service and ambiance (there were lots of obvious regulars coming and going, being greeted by name, which gave a very friendly vibe to the restaurant).
My only negative point is that it was very hot in the restaurant, despite the ceiling fans. It WAS an exceptionally hot day, so it wasn't surprising, but perhaps a few extra fans could be brought in on the rare occasions we have such high temperatures?

“warm bowl of love”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2013

Lunch upstairs is an interesting affair. Turn left at the top of the stairs and stand in line for a table in the enclosed restaurant. Turn right for a short queue at the buffet for lighter meals. On advice, I opted for the Seafood Chowder which was served straight away. After paying for it (Euro7.00), a young man took my tray and showed me to a seat, thank goodness overlooking the stalls down below. When not slurping my chowder or chomping on one the three slices of hearty, crusty bread, the sights below were great entertainment. I will definitely return.

“Lunch here was excellent!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2013

A nice menu, friendly staff & great value. The ingredients are sourced in The English Market below & locally. Nice wines and unusual cordials etc - the staff were great to advise ingredients and how the various dishes were cooked. Made a difficult job of choosing a dish a little easier!!! Best to book in advance otherwise be prepared to Q!

“Good Lunch in Cork City”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2013

We had lunch here on a day trip to Cork. We arrived at 2.45, they serve lunch until 4pm. The lunch time rush has finished and there were plenty of tables available in the dining room area. There are two dining areas both overlooking the market. Service was prompt and friendly Liver and bacon for her and a ribeye steak for him. Both very good with good mash and real rashers with the liver and garlicky potatoes, mushroom and tomato with the steak. Whilst it is good to see lunch served until 4pm be warned this place is popular and the food choice may be limited after 3pm on the basis that they are simply sold out. We will call again
