“Needs a good old clean”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2013

Ate in the Bar here last weekend and it was NOT good, place feels dirty, food was awful, I left most of my food and when the lady serving us cleared the table she didn't ask was everything OK, clearly it was not, most the food that arrived at our table at the start was still there when we had finished, Staff here work very hard, flying left and right, smiling through it all, it is a busy spot that seems to be popular with the locals but in my opinion the food is very poor, the place is unclean and the service is only ok, would not return or recommend this place to eat or stay.

This hotel was part of a tour arranged by Harp and Eagle. We could not have been more happy with the accommodations. The breakfasts were wonderful, the staff was very gracious and helpful, the pub atmosphere was charming. The fine dinning was exceptional. The room was very comfortable, clean, and quite. All and all we were not disappointed in any way.

We stayed for a night in midweek and would love to have stayed longer. The whole experience was great starting with such a wonderful welcome from the reception staff. After a long drive from Belfast our room was not ready but I needed a room to change for a meeting, and was given one straight away to use, without charge.
The Poets Bar is full of atmosphere and so busy at lunchtime but the staff are incredibly helpful and quick-the food is really very good. Value for money and enormous plates full!!
We stayed in one of the suites that was very nicely prepared, spacious and with a great gas fire. The bathroom had separate bath and shower with plenty of hot water.
We ate next door at the Town Hall which is owned by the hotel, see separate blog. Breakfast in the hotel was first rate.
The only problem we had which in a way speaks volumes of the hotel is that getting parked mid day in their large car park id very frustrating!!

Room Tip: Go for one of the suites-well worth it and still good value for money

Spent the Easter break at the Old Ground Hotel. This is a very good hotel, has the old standards that make this hotel what it is. The reception staff are on the ball, very quick check in, very pleasent and efficent staff.Rooms very comfortable and clean.House keeing staff vey good at their job and very nice with it.

Just one small dissappointment, we were a party of 4 and a baby could not get a table for food in the bar, I know it was very busy and pot luck if you could grab a table, waited ages we were not lucky, however ate up town so it was no problem really.

Room Tip: Book early for this hotel.

Located in the center of town, this is the ideal location for touring Ennis or other Clare locales. Rooms were spacious and modern, despite the classic appearance of the exterior and lobby. The staff was welcoming and accomodating. Special recognition to Bart, who was very helpful with directions and always greeted you with a warm smile and to John, who seemed to be the hardest worker in all of Ennis. The Inn has two restaurants. One is a pub, "The Poet's Corner" was great for lunch, though always busy and tough to get a seat. While, the "Town Hall" is more formal dining and offers nice ambiance, but we found the food only mediocre for the price. My only complaint about the hotel was regarding parking. The hotel offers free, but limited parking. The lot is constantly full, particularly during meal times and events. Twice I had to pay for parking on the street. I would recommend the hotel reserve parking for overnight guests only.

Room Tip: A wedding was being held the weekend we were present, with guests spilling out front for smoking, et...

Greta location, excellent staff, big room (was in 411) and great food. Right in the heart of town so you can park up and walk everywhere. Ate in bar, staff very nice, was extremely busy but waiter got us a table a after a short wait. Food excellent, huge portions. Room very nice, huge comfy 4 poster bed. Only 2 slight negative comments. Coffee table which is a glass mirrowed one had 2 big cracks in it and very wobbly legs, could be dangerous and even though there was a huge flat screen TV, I could only get 2 ch's. Overall a great hotel experience an I will return.

Room Tip: We were in 411. Big and spacious but you have to go up eight steps after you go inside the door.

I checked in yesterday for one night without any real knowledge or expectations of the hotel. I was very pleasantly surprised by my experience. The staff, without exception, were friendly, respectful and enthusiastic as well as young and clearly local: a credit to their families, schools and training by the hotel. The hotel has a very buzzy and busy bar where i enjoyed the second half of the Wales/England six nations decider. Well patronised by locals and guests, it felt like a real pub rather than a hotel bar. Service, drinks and food all exceptional served quickly and responsively. Dinner in the hotel was delicious and much better than I expected. Room service breakfast this morning was timely and very good. The room was well appointed although very warm. I can never understand why some guests like to sleep in a sauna!

The Old Ground is an ideal property for seeing County Clare, Limerick, Galway as well as the medieval ambience of Ennis.

One particular challenge is the hotel car park. The hotel is located in the centre of Ennis and has a small car park. I waited twenty minutes to get a space on check-in and on check-out this morning I was blocked by an inappropriately parked car which I had to push forward (with the brake on) to allow me to exit. But, all in all, a most enjoyable stay and strongly recommended.

Room Tip: Select a suite as they are both comfortable and fairly priced.
