“It is all about the steak.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2012

We have been going to this restaurant for over twenty years. It still serves, providing you order medium rare, the best steak in Scotland. There are however irritations. Going at a popular time will probably mean waiting in their seriously cramped waiting room. Depending on the size of your party, this can be over an hour, but 30-40 minutes is more usual. Drinks served during your wait are very expensive, oh and don't ask for real ale, there isn't any in the Chop and Ale House! The two maitre ds are both excellent and do a great job of looking after customers, but the Immaculately dressed Lady owner could at least spare a smile to patrons whom she knows have been regulars for a very long time. For us though it really is all about the steak, always superb, and the South African wines are without exception delicious. For a special treat, try the Springfield Whole Berry, a really fine wine.

“Best steak i have had in my life. However, not particularly the best dining experience.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2012

I stay only a mile from the Champany, and i pass it on a daily basis. Every time i pass, i smell the amazing smell of the chargrill food. After years of passing and hearing about the Champany and it's renowned repuatation i decided to finally give it a try.

I was slightly, disappointed at first when i walked in as it was far from what i had visualized in my head . The champany / chop & ale house has this real HIGH HIGH reputation and everyone within the Falkirk / West Lothian area knows it is the "posh" place to go out for some food if you want to show off. The chop & ale house does not accept reservation bookings and you just have to turn up and wait to be seated. We were directed to this very narrow and small waiting area, which very quickly was over crowded. We we there for about 10 minutes before space was available for us to be seated. The table was very crammed and small. The surroundings such as the window ledge etc weren't particulary of the cleanest standard and the decor was somewhat of the late 90's. I orded a beer which was a scottish lager i had not heard of and was extremely refreshing and crisp, and then came the food...Which was to die for. The taste they produce from the chargrill is unbelievable. Really Really tasty and i couldn't get it in my mouth quick enough. The one thing i would like to complain about is having to share the chips. I was with my girlfriend, and that was fine. But i thought to myself....What if i was with a male client on a business dinner? I wouldn't particularly want to be sharing my chips with someone i don't really know to well! There was hardly any room at the table to eat, and there was not much space to get out your chair on leaving. Once i paid my bill, the change was not returned to me, which i thought was a bit cheeky. But overall, i shall be returning to the Chop & Ale , and soon to try the champany restaurant . It is pricey, but the food is amazing and you get what you pay for at the end of the day. I look forward to coming back to the Chop & Ale and trying the renowned burgers!

“Great burger.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2012

Pitched up late afternoon and got a table after a short wait. Apparently you can't book. Service was good and we both choose burgers. Great choice and quality burger cooked to perfection with great steak chips. All in all great meal if a bit more pricey than the average burger but then again it wasn't an average burger !!

“Very poor value for money”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2012

Nice countryside setting and pleasant staff. However, while the decor seems to be firmly rooted in the 1990's, prices seem to be set for a time far in the future. How anyone can justify £15 for frozen scampi and chips is beyond me! Wors sausage was tasty but not served with mash and not cooked medium rare as requested following waiter's recommendation. Perhaps steak and burgers are this restaurant's forte but I do not intend to return to find out and I suspect there are better places to eat in or around Linlithgow.
