“How people lived here 3 centuries ago”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2013

Until you visit their interiors, you can not imagine how people dwelt and survived harsh winter conditions. You can visit and explore the settlement as it was before the advent of electricity, including an old loom as people weaved here for Harris Tweed.

“Way back when”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2012

Enjoyed the village and seeing how people managed to live, not only long ago, but up until the 1970's. Enjoyed seeing tweed being woven, peat being cut and dried and burned.

“Well worth a visit or a stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2012

Visited the blackhouse village just for a day visit in Oct 2012 having previously stayed over a couple of nights in one of the houses a few years ago. A really fascinating place to visit - in season there's a great cafe and lovely evening food can be arranged. Its easy enough to walk around all the houses from the car park and there's a stony beach at the end of the path for a visit as well. We loved our nights in a one bedroom black house - small multifuel stove kept the house snug and warm, small but functional kitchen and bathroom. Great experience!

“Lovely experience not to be missed if part of a fuller day's schedule”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2012

The Blackhouse village at Gearannan is very nice. Really it only takes half an hour to go around, but on a nice day you could enjoy the views and the picnic area outside and perhaps do the walk to Dalbeg which looked lovely, but for a better day than we had today. It leads you to a little bay with a small beach and a beautiful loch full of water lilies - perfect otter country. The Blackhouse Village is really sweetly done, with a cute giftshop and cafe (excellent Scotch broth and scones), and then there's two wee blackhouses to go into which are interesting. Looks like a nice place to stay in those that are available to rent but not perhaps for my husband who is well over 6 foot - the ceilings and doorways are perfect for hobbits! Make a trip here part of a day spent at Callanish Standing Stones, then go the the Blackhouse Village, then have late coffee and cake at the lovely Morven Gallery.
