“Disappointed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2013

Visited the village in August; it was closed due to no electricity in the local area. I would have though that would have added to the authenticity!

“Wonderullly evocative”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2013

Great wee museum and very evocative to a byegone age. Don't forget the wee cottage across the road- just as interesting. Was in the process of being re-thatched whilst we were there which was fascinating.

“As we were.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2013

A great help to taking a nostalgic look back into the past. A reminder of the hard and simple lives earlier generations experienced. Please don't rush through this site - take time to feel the atmosphere of a time gone by and ponder the lot of those who once lived there. These houses were lived in as late as the 1970s. A great experience.

“A fine example of a blackhouse - with the sadness of a lost village”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2013

This site is run by Historic Scotland, so entry for members is free - as it is for members of English Heritage, who have a reciprocal agreement with Historic Scotland.

The restored blackhouse is well worth a visit. It is furnished as it would have been for a family, so there is lots of interesting things to look at, and there was even a peat fire burning in the central hearth when we were there, which really added to the atmosphere.

I read a previous review about this site in which the reviewer complained that there was only one restored house and the others were just "ruins". Where on earth is that person's sense of history, romance and sadness re those lost homes? Those forty or so shells of houses are what makes a visit to Arnol so atmospheric and poignant. How can you not stand here and feel sadness for a lost community while at the same time wondering about the scores of people who used to call these shells their homes? Just ruins indeed!

In addition to the restored blackhouse there is also a restored, newer smaller cottage to visit and, all in all, I consider this a most worthwhile place to visit.

“Very interesting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2013

Fairly modest charges for entry and really interesting to wander around inside. Duck your head getting in through the doorway and mind your step going up to the next level.
