My girlfriend and I came across the Bridgend Hotel by chance when our ferry back to the main land was cancelled at the end of a weeks holiday during the wild weather experienced on Islay in late March and we were forced to ring round frantically to find a room for the night. It was made all the more challenging as we had a 6 month old Labrador in tow!
The wonderful Lorna took us in and treated us to incredible hospitality. We were very kindly given the family room and even our dog got his own room! Dinner was lovely although a bit touch and go as throughout the meal the Islands power continually came and went.........but the lovely staff prevailed and my Steak was fantastic.
The evenings events continued to unfold with the power finally failing later that evening (to Lorna's relief it was after dinner service). Again this didn't damped ours or the other guests spirits and we all spent the evening in the lounge chatting and sampling the Bridgend's extensive Islay whisky collection in front of the roaring firers in the dark, with the power finally being restored in the early hours of the morning.
The family room was tastefully decorated, light, spacious and well appointed with views out onto the rear garden of the hotel. The large bed was incredibly comfortable and the shower hot and powerful. Our pup enjoyed his stay just as much as we did, with everyone making a fuss over him.
Our finally memory of leaving the Bridgend was Lorna's fantastic goodbye of "I don't do handshakes, I do hugs!". Bubbly, attentive and a true star of hospitality!
If you're ever on Islay and you're looking for a lovely place to stay in a very central location then the Bridgend Hotel is definitely highly recommended, especially if you have a four legged friend along for the holiday!
We'll be back.........maybe for the Feis Ile!
