I stayed for five nights at this hotel as part of an organised coach tour of the area of mostly over 50's (i'm not one of them). From the outside this hotel looks a bit tired and we weren't too sure how it would be on the inside. The hotel is arranged with a main building housing the reception bar and restaurant with the accommodation being in a separate 2 storey L shaped block. The staff where very welcoming and the keys to each of our rooms were in the door. The decor within the rooms was very tired ( a lick of paint and some new furniture wouldn't go amiss) but was also very clean, with most rooms having an onsuite shower rather than a bath. The rooms and corridors were very warm which was nice as it was cold and frosty outside. My room faced the sun rise and the view of hills and countyside was amazing. The only downside to this arrangement is when it's raining you need a brolly to get from one building to the other.
We were on a half board basis, the breakfast consisted of a buffet of everything you could possibly want to get you started. cereals, porridge, full cooked bacon eggs etc, toast, fruit juice, tea and coffee. Evening meal was a four course menu with 3 or 4 choices for starter followed by soup of the day, main course and desert also 3 or 4 choices. All courses where plentiful and very tasty, althought the veg was a bit more done than I normally have it. The restaurant staff were very friendly working efficiently and quietly making sure the food was served quickly without being rushed.
Didn't stay for the nightly entertainment as this was mainly aimed at the older clientale who assured me that it was fun.
Overall I would say that if you are looking for a base to stay while sight seeing in the area and have realistic expectations you wouldn't go far wrong with the Rob Roy Hotel
