A one-night stay here to attend a family wedding. The setting is glorious, with terrific views across Loch Ard and the mountains beyond.
Room somewhat dated, but otherwise fine - putting an iPod dock in a room does not automatically make it up-to-date - with plenty of space and (lumpy) easy chairs. The beds are comfortable, and the hotel very clean in general.
Wedding catering is not the same as restaurant service, and expectations are not as high, but the dinner provided was a creditable effort. Breakfast the next day was very good, if rather slow to arrive.
The staff were affable but not charming enough to compensate for the stratospheric bar tariff, and were strangely absent from said bar when guests were assembling and requiring service.
The nonsense of having a credit card 'pre-authorised' on check-in, however, seems utterly pointless - especially as everyone at check-out the next morning seemed to be having their original cards rejected by the system, requiring payment by a different means. I also object to having to opt out of a charitable donation to Macdonald's current cause, however small that donation is, and consider it a disgrace that a business on this scale fails to absorb credit card charges within the quoted tariff. Having to pay extra for the privilege of settling my account with a credit card, when the original 'pre-authorised' card is being rejected for no good reason rubs salt into the wound.
I won't be rushing to stay at another Macdonald hotel, no matter how glorious the view, but in this case there may not be too many alternatives to choose among.

“Fantastic romantic stay!”

Macdonald Forest Hills Hotel & Resort

My husband booked this hotel for us to have a quiet night away while grandparents babysitted! I have to say it was an excellent choice and I would not hesitate in going back. The loch view room that we had was large and recently refurbished. Having a new flat screen tv and ipod docking station was an additional treat. The views are lovely (includes the goats!)
Dinner was very nice on the Sat night, as well as catering for a large wedding, the staff managed to serve the restuarant and were very attentive. Hubbie had to ask a few times for the waiter to top up my wine glass but then I was enjoying it quite quickly!
Breakfast in the room was also very nice and was delivered warm and on time. All in all an excellent choice for a romantic getaway.

“Nice chill-out break”

Booked a superior room overlooking the loch for £165 D/B&B. From check-in to check-out we were impressed with the friendliness, helpfulness and cheerfulness of all the staff. The leisure complex was being refurbished, so the hotel wasn't busy.
The meals in the Garden Restaurant were good and a fair choice of courses. You could also eat in the Rafters bistro which is less formal and the price of drink is lower. I didn't really mind the price of drink in the cocktail bar as the service was first class and the surroundings were very relaxing. Unfortunately it was raining most of the time we were there, so I will have to return in the summer to enjoy the views. On returning home my wife discovered that she had left a cardigan in the room, so I contacted the hotel and the cardigan was posted out to us without any fuss.

“shocking bar prices!!!!!”

Macdonald Forest Hills Hotel & Resort

Sixteen of us go away every year for an overnight Xmas Dance (eight couples) and this year we decided to pay a bit more. The welcome was lovely. Checkin was friendly and fast- they advised us that the bar could not deal with cash after 11.30pm so we had to leave credit card details ( never heard of this before). The room was lovely and very comfortable. Before getting ready for the dance we went to the bar .£9 for a lager and a morgans n coke!!!!!.Needless to say I had to go to the offsales to put a bottle in my hand bag. The brochure promise cocktails n snack ( crisps )- cocktails ( mostly fruit juice) and n crisps provided> We were packed ( and I mean packed!!!) into two tables for 8. No elbow room,. We were served at different times and to top it off the managment debated with us whether we had paid a bar bill for £80(which we had paid but there was a"problem somewhere between the waiter and the bar". By the time the "problem was resolved" my husbands food was cold. The coffee was served before the dessert. The dance floor had two large pillars in the middle, If it wasnt for the great disco and celiidh the whole night was going to be a disaster.
I am about to write to the Director of this hotel group. For dances dont touch it with a barge pole. Its an amazing setting but boy you are gonna pay for the view!!!
