“management staff totally unhelpful”

Fairfield House

Oct 2, 2007

We have just returned from a night at the Fairfield House Hotel - our second time there in as many years. We arrived at 12 pm for a wedding which was to take place at 2pm. Our room wasn't ready until 1:15 - we were desperate to get in and start getting ready (3 people to shower and get dressed and my 8 month old son to put down for his nap) and told the staff as much. They replied "Well, we did give you the option of staying over the night before". One way to drum up some business I guess. No appologies were given. It was a desperate dash to get ready and my son missed his nap (read chaos!). The room was lovely and the shower great, however, as night fell, the room turned very cold. We asked for some heat and were told "The heat is on a timer, if we turned your heating on, it would go on everywhere". Eventually they brought some space heaters which we blasted. They didn't have a second key ("it went missing") and in fact had no master key either. Safe.
I found the cleaning staff delightful and the same with the wait staff, but the managment were awful awful awful. They were rude and could barely spare you a glance, never mind a smile.
The breakfast was quite yummy so that partly made up for it.

The guaranteed check in time at the hotel is 2pm, which we do make clear to all guests who book with us. On the day in question 40 of our 44 bedrooms were taken by wedding guests. As we were over 90% occupied the previous night we had to turn round over 30 rooms between our check out time of 11am and 2pm. By 1.00pm we had checked in all but three rooms. As the room in question was a family suite we could not move the occupants to another room as all of our family rooms were taken.
I apologise if you felt we were not sympathetic. With regards to our heating it is timed to come on at 5pm. As far as I am aware we were asked to put the heating on at around 3pm, not nightfall. As was explained this would have heated the whole hotel and we provided portable heaters.
Again I apologise if you felt we were not helpful but we were under pressure to check everyone in before the wedding.
I was glad to hear that you found our team members to be helpful and that you enjoyed breakfast.

“Faulty Towers moves north!!!”

Fairfield House

We have stayed previously at this hotel and found it to be ok. However this time we had room 57 - small, very small, with a very small window with no view. When the guests next door go to the toilet and shower, you can hear everything!! Shower, toilet and all associated noises!! If it rains you can hear every drop as it hits the window, as the window is velux roof style. Tea and coffee had to be made on the floor. When I say floor, I mean FLOOR, no tray, table or any means of being off the carpet. Complained, but the manager, Mr Maxwell - most unhelpful, told us this is a standard room, checked with five other friends all staying in standard rooms and they were all ok. Surely not standard (or safe) to have to make tea and coffee on the bedroom carpet? The shower screen was broken and the floor of the bathroom became completley flooded, a health and safety issue, as my wife slipped climbing out of the shower/bath, towels were then thrown onto the floor to stop further flooding. Mr Maxwell said that no other guests had complained. When checking out of the hotel, the bill was incorrect, there was an overcharge on the restaurant bill. Mr Maxwell refused to amend or query. A fellow guest of ours in the restaurant had cut his lip on something sharp that was atttached to the serviette!! The maitre'd offered to exchange the serviette but offered no apology even though our guest had blood trickling from his upper lip. All in all the visit was far from good and we were expected to pay £189 for the room which was totally unsatisfactory.
When visiting do not get Room 57.... and if you do have to stay, also remember that the rooms above the kitchen will be noisy, as you will hear the kitchen's extractor fans working below. In fact do not visit!!!

I was sorry to read of your disappointment with your stay. We do not usually receive complaints about the standards of our bedrooms. As you arrived without a reservation we did our best to accommodate you at short notice even though the Gold Cup weekend is the busiest of our year. I will look into your comments and will ensure they are rectified for future guests. I would point out though that were no mistakes regarding the dinner charge on your invoice.

“Peace and Quiet”

Fairfield House

Sep 9, 2007

My husband and I have just stayed at the hotel on a DBB basis and found it to be excellent value for money. On arrival we had asked if it was possible to have a new room rather than a traditional room, the manager was very helpful and let us see a couple of rooms and let us choose which one we wanted. The hotel was fully booked so this was much appreciated and we ended up taking a suite which was very spacious and like your own "bungalow". This had just been renovated. We used the leisure facilities which were fine. Dinner was lovely with so much choice on offer although as previous people have mentioned the service was slow and we were the last people to have dinner that night but the staff were lovely. Breakfast was fantastic and a great choice of food once again. We will make a point of going back soon though as it was well worth the money and would recommend anyone to stay here.

“Pleasant stay”

Stayed here for a weekend, booked a family room for three and got a spacious suite. Very friendly staff and a nice atmosphere made the stay a pleasant experience. We stayed with a 4 yrs old, and the hotel itself doesn't offer anything special for children - but as there's a huge playground only two minutes walk away, this really wasn't a problem. And the big pool was playground enough itself - a big plus! Food was excellent, both breakfast and dinner. Just a short walk to Ayr town center with lots of shops, cafès and restaurants. I recommend both a visit in Ayr and a stay at the Fairfield House hotel.

Booked a two night stay for my wife's birthday and we were not disappointed. Saved money via Laterooms.com (£69 per night/room) and the room (No.17) was extremely spacious. Excellent breakfast (included in price) and the staff were very friendly and polite. The hotel is ideally located on the seafront and is easily located. Would definately return.
