“Good meal”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2013

I had seen it was under new management so decided for a town centre meal. Staff very courteous. It wasn't too busy glad to say, got to pick table I wanted. We got 2 glasses of Diet Coke with Ice very quickly (well it is warm) and I ordered Gammon Steak below £8.00 and friend got chicken with potatoes. Came out about 10/15 minutes later, very warm. Really enjoyed steak and pineapple which were all friend. i dont eat onion rings or mushrooms and left them. Ate some of the chips, very good. My friend said his main was enough for him. I had ordered cheesecake with cream. This wasn't what i was expecting but very good. It was around £20 for 2 of us, so great value. I would go there again.

“great pub, would recommend to any family during the day, great atmosphere at night.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2013

I went to Mcarthers for a drink on a Saturday night and the atmosphere was great! The staff at great too! Drinks come fast and the staff make conversation and are a good laugh. The group of girls I was with enjoyed it so much that we decided to come back the next day (Sunday) for lunch around 2 o'clock. The place was rather busy and the food was great. The staff took orders quickly and made sure everything was okay. Generly a great place to be. Also seen a family in who looked rather happy with the service they were provided with. The two young kids they had with them were provided with a colouring in book to keep them happy while they waited for their food :) great place to be!

“Huge Room For Improvement”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2013

The West of the Moon - a bar / restaurant directly next to this establishment - appeared to be very busy. By contrast, McArthurs Bar was empty. As I had not eaten in McArthurs before, my friend and I decided to give the place the benefit of the doubt and order some drinks and a meal there.

The lack of customers should have been a warning sign - on entering the building a member of staff approached us with a complacent, unenthusiastic attitude. Rather than directing us to a table, he advised that we pick one (and there were plenty to choose from!). When we sat down at a table, we found it had several wet stains on the surface. There was also heavy rock music blaring loudly from the speakers (clearly a staff member's music preference rather than something for customers).

Initially we ordered drinks which were two ciders with a drop of black current diluting juice. These drinks appeared to take forever to arrive and when they did we found they had far too much diluting juice in them. The waitress, young and seemingly new, did not write down our food order and had to approach us several times for us to repeat our orders as she kept forgetting..

I can't fault the food itself - it was lovely and filling. However, the staff appeared more concerned in their social affairs than providing decent customer service. For the majority of our two hour stay, staff members were sat in the public seating area laughing and giggling with one-another while holding their mobile phones. Later on, the same members of staff could be heard 'fooling around' in the adjoining room to the bar / restaurant and our area was regularly left unattended. It was no surprise that many of the customers who ventured into McArthurs in the hope of ordering a meal left after a few minutes of examining their surroundings.

It comes as no surprise to me that this place ranks as the 10th worst pub / restaurant in Ayr on TripAdvisor. I have heard from other reviewers that the place has had a recent refurbishment but this means nothing if the customer does not feel valued, or is treated with respect by staff.

“Room for improvement”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2013 via mobile

Went in for meal staff were nice but most of time spent sitting at bar on phones, never once came up and asked if we needed anything or if everything was alright. Food we have no complaints about it was lovely but there is major improvements needed for this place to keep people's custom. We did witness people coming in looking around then leaving as there is no atmosphere about the place what so ever. Customers are not welcomed when they come in the door, the tables are dirty, empty glasses sat at bat whilst 4 members of staff stood chatting, laughing and really not catering for the customers
