“A step back in time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2012

Nicely laid out, and a look back in time of how people lived. Well worth a visit.

“Rabbie Burns”

I didn't feel that I learned anything very much about Robert Burns. They could have made so much more of this asset.

“Hardly a "day" out but ......”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2012

The Birthplace Museum is a somewhat understated tribute to a Scottish genius. It is a "must" for any visitor to the Ayrshire area but its compact size and nature can hardly be described as "a good day out". The whole visit, incorporating the cottage where he was born (small, beautifully restored but minimally furnished and taking up only ten or fifteen minutes to experience in total, the short nearby walk down the "Poet's Walk" (the statue of the 'wee sleakit cowrin' beastie' is the highlight!) and on to the Auld Kirk (where Tam O'Shanter disturbed the witches' dance and the burial place of Rabbie's father, William) takes no more than 20-30 minutes even to an old dodderer like me.A further 10 minutes takes you past the Burns monument to the Brig o' Doon where Tam escaped the witches with the loss of only his horse's tail. Then return to the carpark via the museum which whilst very worthy could hardly be described as exciting. A morning or an afternoon spent visiting this site is well rewarded but, a full day, never. Entrance charge to the cottage which includes entrance to the museum and a pictorial map of the entire attraction with brief notes is quite reasonable. For those looking for a snack or liquid refreshment, the "Poet's Corner" tea-room across the road from the cottage is highly recommended.
