“Life is better after a bit of fresh sea ayr.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2011

I grew up by the sea in Wellington, New Zealand and I believe nothing revives you more than a good deep breath of salty sea air in your lungs. By the sea B&B offers this in unlimited quantities, just one street back from the beachfront and you couldn't find a friendlier host than Julie. I stayed in room number 2 on the second floor and was spoilt for space but the thing that grabbed me most was the lovely outlook from the bedroom window. I was woken by sun streaming in and birds tweeting, the perfect way to end a comfortable nights sleep.

Breakfast started with a variety of fresh melon, good strong coffee and a cooked breakfast that puts the Irish fry to shame. The eggs were perfection on a plate and the dining area was set up nicely so you had a chance to chat to other guests if you wished. The common lounge area is a real bonus as many b&b's don't offer this feature. The hardest bit about staying here was getting on my bike and leaving!

Highly recommended and only a short work into the main village. If you go to the pub twa dugs, make sure to try the locally produced Jolly Beggar Ale and finish it off with fish n chips from Dino's across the road - plus you can sit and eat your supper in the park opposite with Robbie Burns to keep you company.

Room Tip: I stayed on the second floor in room 2, if you don't mind climbing stairs the outlook is lovely.

Dear Indiana June

Thank you so much for your kind words. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay with us at Bythesea and it was great to meet a relative of the great 'Rabbie Burns'. Stayed in room 2 in the attic. Clean, well equipped but small with a very low angled ceiling. Any one on one side of the bed risks a headache if they sit up ! Also the desk is unusable due to ceiling height and we banged heads on the bathroom door. No mention of this low ceiling on the website. Other issues, the sheet didn't fit the bed which isn't great, you had to boil the kettle on the floor. All staff very friendly except one older lady who was very offhand when we asked for a sheet to fit the bed. It's a shame, great place let down by small problems. Wouldn't stay again unless could be guaranteed not to stay in room 2!

Dear Paul
We are so sorry your stay was not to your satisfaction. Unfortunately we didn't find out any of this until you reviewed us. Regarding the sloping ceiling in one of our attic rooms we have never had any previous complaints but thank you for bringing this to our attention. We are disappointed you felt unable to discuss this with us as it could have been easily resolved by moving you to another room on the first floor or ground floor.
I can only apologise for the staff member who dealt with your request and this matter will be discussed with them as customer service is very important to us.
The kettle in the room should not have been on the floor to boil we have a table for it to sit on many apologies for this.
Should you wish to visit us again please contact me direct and i will ensure you do not have room 2 again!

Kind regards
Julie McIlwaine

Spotlessly clean. Very comfortable, well maintained and stylish B&B.
Would like to have reason to return to stay again. Our room was spacious with a very comfortable bed and easily a good size if a family room had been needed. Stylish soft furnishings with a real eye for attention to detail.
Nice large shower in the ensuite.
Generous cooked breakfast with good cafetiere of coffee. A great way to start the day.
Parking permit also supplied for on street parking. Easy walking distance of the town centre too.

We returned from Bythesea this morning and would have liked to stay longer!

We booked a three night stay and were very impressed. The family room that we occupied was extremely well appointed and spacious, light and airy with heavy dark curtains which were useful on the bright sunny mornings that we experienced.

The bathroom housed a large shower and toiletries of a higher standard than one would usually expect for a similar price.

Our room was attended to on every day of our stay, surpassing much of the accomodation we have previously used in Ayr.

The weather allowed us to venture out every day of our stay. However the enclosed patio area and lounge with games console, television, board games and stereo would have made for an enjoyable stay should we have needed them. We were also provided with a front door key which allowed us to come and go as we pleased.

Breakfast is of an extremely high standard with a large choice; full Scottish breakfast, a vegetarian option or smaller options including croissants and breakfast rolls alongside a selection of fresh fruit, juices and cereals.

Our eight year old daughter has asked that I add that we would stay again, and from the visitors book in reception I would recommend booking in advance - with no reservations!

Many thanks to the staff who made us feel extremely welcome.

This is a fantastic place to stay! The room I had was roomy and well decorated and quite comfortable. I was impressed that the room had among other amenities a small electric fan. Though Ayr doesn't usually get warm enough to use one it's good to have in the room. The entire hotel was very clean. The breakfast was cooked to order by a lovely lady who made me feel right at home. The Manageress was also very friendly and very approachable. The lounge area had a very large TV (the rooms had smaller ones) and a stereo. I will definately stay here again when I return to Ayr. By the Sea is a clean friendly place to stay where I feel welcome!

This B&B was so lovely. We were in Room 6 on the ground floor, so the easiest of access for late nights (we attended a wedding reception in Alloway during our stay in Ayr) and was spacious enough for the two of us. Tasteful decor, extremely comfortable bed, very very clean, superb power shower and complimentary toiletries (which we didn't need to use) and a welcome tray with Tea, Coffee etc. The little touches of toiletries and biscuits with the Tea etc really mean a lot in terms of making a B&B more like home. The communal area was well equipped for cosy nights with huge screen TV, HiFi and comfy couches. The breakfast area was clean and bright.....and believe me when I say that the choices you could have at breakfast were endless.
If I return to Ayr, I will definitley return to bythesea, as the hospitality was fantastic and for a 4 star B&B like this, the rates are unbeatable.

Beautifully finished throughout and with comfy beds, this place was a real find. Lovely B&B with a great breakfast - perfect if you're staying close the night before a ferry crossing. We stayed in room 3 - it was comfy, had a good ensuite and was a good size. It was very windy when we were there - bit of a draught from the windows, but not really an issue when the curtains were pulled. Would heartily recommend this place to anyone staying in Ayr. Now if the town could just scrap their ridiculous voucher parking system...
