“Delicious food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2013

Enjoyed our visit to Murrayshall House Hotel. The hotel is a beautiful old building, full of character and charm and only surpassed by the wonderful grounds. The golf course is very enjoyable and testing! Dining in the Old Masters Restaurant was first class - excellent service and food. We will be delighted to return someday.

I use this hotel often for business meetings & return every month because the service & food is hard to beat. Me & my guests are always made very welcome by the staff & nothing is too much trouble for them. We are always looked after very well by Cathy, Carol & Chris & the food is the some of the best of all the venues I use. Would recommend this hotel to anyone & the added bonus is it is set in a beautiful location surrounded by impressive countryside!

We stayed at this hotel with a group for a weekend (Saturday to Monday), however the following review refers to our (husband and myself) personal impressions only and should not be understood as representing grou views in any form.

Please also note that this review is the result of being forced to edit a previous version which Trip Advisor removed. The hotel also deals with critical reviews in a way I personally do not expect from a 4 star-hotel.

Check-in was friendly and efficient and we were given room 1 right up the main staircase.

Enormous bed (200 x 200cm?), plenty of space in the room and a spotlessly clean bathroom. Bed was comfortable, wardrobe space sufficient and easy to make use of, just needed rearranging the set of drawers inside the wardrobe to a more sensible position. The shower in our room produced good hot water with slightly below average pressure.

Only negative point about the room: the cleaners use some detergent with a very overpowering smell (lemon?). It was unpleasant enough that we left the windows open for several hours to get rid of it.

Reception had asked us for our menu choice for the first evening dinner when we checked in: I have come across this before and am always reluctant to do it, because I have noticed more than once in other places that it can be code for "we will pre-cook it at our leisure and reheat when you sitting down". The restaurant asked again for the choice as we were sitting down for dinner - it looked to us to us at the time that no communication had taken place between reception and restaurant, however we have been informed through a third party source since that the hotel has this policy to get an indication of how many of each dish on offer will be required.

Water had been provided on the tables and two glasses, one like a pils glass, the other possibly like a wine glass. We poured water into the wine-type glass, it seemed odd to use the "pils" glass for water and we thought another glass would be provided for wine later. One member of staff came around with wine bottles, looked at the glasses, did not pour any wine because it was the wrong type of glass from her/his/its opinion (deliberately written non-gender specific) and left for the next table. Fortunately we had managed to transfer our water into the other glasses by the time another member of restaurant staff came around to pour wine.

Starters arrived, small slice of smoked salmon and buttered toast. Two bites and it was gone. At least the toast had butter on it, unlike the rather plain rolls they served before (no butter had been put on the tables). Main course and desert were equally small portions - this was taking the term "portion control" to a new level and made weight watchers meals look like a feast. You could get close to giving up after such a meal and drive 10 minutes to Perth to eat at Wetherspoons or any other restaurant.

Wine service continued to be pretty bad throughout dinner on the first night. At one point a member of restaurant staff said to us "there isn't any more red wine". Was he/she/it joking or had we managed to drink the cellar dry? Is the hotel aware that they are missing an opportunity to make good sales if they only come round for the first refill the main course has been finished? To be fair, wine service improved later in the weekend.

Breakfast on the first morning disappointing again: our orders for cooked breakfast had been taken within reasonable time, but nothing appeared for a long time and I noticed that several other tables who had ordered later had been served already. Fortunately one waitress spotted the problem and sorted it quickly. Overall we had the impression that the restaurant was functioning better when a certain member of staff was not around. We leave it to you to find out who we refer to (we are not allowed to give a description of him/her/it)... and watch what glass you use!

Would we go back to this hotel? Definitely not as there are plenty of alternatives in the area.

We were the organisers of a group of 48 staying for three nights at the end of April, ending with a Scottish Country Dance on the Sunday evening. It was a busy time for the hotel with two weddings parteis to deal with, as well as ourselves.
There were some initial problems, but the staff responded promptly and willingly to comments made through us, and we had a very good weekend. We would especially mention the food, taken from a menu that we had chosen, giving a choice of three for each course. It was perfectly adequate in quantity and delicious throughout, and we were pleased to call in the chef, on our dance night, and thank him in front of us all.

I have stayed here twice with business colleagues and both times I have had stunning rooms , one in the annex and one in the main hotel, both were suites, quiet, good facilities e.g tv in bedroom and sitting area, good quality tea/coffee/biscuits, d'ecleor toiletries, iron and ironing board. We ate in the Bar Restaurant and both times the service was good and the food good value. We all enjoyed breakfast in the morning and unlike some hotels the whole breakfast menu was included in the price ie smoked salmon and scrambled eggs was the same as scrambled egg on toast. I maybe wouldn't pay top price for my stay, that wouldn't be possible for my business account but I have no complaints about value, service and cleanliness and the location is stunning.

This must have been a fantastic residence at one time. However while we had a good stay at a very attractive price, the restaurant let the experience down. The service felt automated, lacking personality and we felt we were treated as items that needed to be processed. The food was disappointing and did not follow the menu description.
At breakfast we had a similar experience. The food was good, but, the waitress delivered the cooked dish before we had even chosen cereal or fresh fruit. There was no need to be so rushed. The restaurant team were obviously foreign, and lacked customer empathy.
While the rooms reflected the price paid, the room we were allocated to had an "old smell" possibly from cooking or simply absence of fresh air. Otherwise fully acceptable, apart from our neighbours breathing too loudly.

We stayed at the Murrayshall on a Sat/Sun night with an Itison deal. Overall a very enjoyable experience even though our room was the furthest away from the main building in the Lynedoch Suite. The suite's soft furnishings are a little tired but otherwise the space on offer and general standard is very high (the welcoming chocolates and fizz helps!). Breakfast was very good on Sun, average on Mon - undercooked poached eggs the main issue. We dined in the Old Masters both evenings and overall the quality and experience was very good, although on both evenings there were 'alterations' to the menu. The Club House is a pleasant place for a drink and not at all stuffy like some other golf associated establishments that we have experienced. There was a wedding party that weekend but this did not interfere with our stay due to good hotel management. Would certainly recommend for all keen golfers.
