I have nothing against this hotel, they didn't do anything to upset me, so this review is as objective as I can make it.
First of all the room was filthy, there was still rubbish in the wardrobes and stains all over the shelves. The bathroom was covered in mould and the shower curtain did nothing to stop all the shower water pouring all over the floor. They pride themselves on the four poster beds in each room, however a creaky old badly made pine bed with falling off garish tartan curtains hardly made for a good nights sleep.
Now the room was the best bit, the restaurant was like something out of Ramsay's kitchen nightmares. There were 3 menus served by the one kitchen, the bar, the restaurant and also the dinner bed and breakfast menu. Between them I'd say there were a total of nearly 30 main courses available. Considering we were the only people in the restaurant (this is a June weekend!!) there is absolutely no way that the food can be made from fresh ingredients. Not only that but it tasted awful. All the cuttlery on the table was filthy, we looked on the other tables for clean tableware but could not find anything clean to replace it. The bar food did look a bit better at least, after all they can't go too wrong surely with sticking a few chips on the side of a microwaved meal? However the bar suffered from the kind of lingering air of decay that makes you wish that there was no smoking ban so at least the musty smell would be disguised.
This place is not cheap either, clearly benefitting from the high number of tourists in Pitlochry without having to bother about actually providing any kind of decent service. We did, by the way, mention the cleanliness of the room when we checked out, we might as well have complained to one of the empty beer barrels stacked outside the brewery for all the interest this provoked.
Stay away from this hotel, Athol palace hotel isn't that much more money..

“Spoilt by lack of cleanliness in annexe”

We were a family party attending a wedding locally and chose the Moulin Hotel annexe on a self catering basis, as it had 3 double bedrooms which was perfect for 6 of us.

The house was fairly old fashioned, but the lounge and dining room areas as well as the bedrooms were large and clean with plenty cupboard space and each contained dresser with large mirror.

However, we found the downstairs toilet dirty, with stained w.c. and this had definitely NOT been cleaned.

The kitchen was also not cleaned property, with rubbish in the bins, smelly cloths lying around, spillages in cupboards had not been cleaned, grill pan in oven was dirty, 6 matching mugs so filthy and with encrusted soup or something on them we did not use them, and the drainage dish in the sink was heavily stained with old tea stains and had obviously not been cleaned in ages. We binned the old cloths but found no clean ones with which to clean up, nor were there any dishtowels, in spite of me calling in advance and asking if there was anything we needed to bring.

We found a packet of antibacterial wipes and proceeded to clean up the kitchen and toilet ourselves.

I made a point, however, of going over to the hotel to point these things out and the lady on reception (Ann I think) said, I will go and tell the housekeeper, so she came back and said they said it is clean but they will go over again if you like, so I said no we had done it ourselves, and she said well nobody else has ever complained about the annexe. After that comment, I wished that instead of us cleaning it ourselves we had gone over and demanded someone come and inspect it.

Overall, this marred our stay somewhat. We did not try the food but the hotel certainly seemed very busy in this respect.

“Nice food but don't be ripped off”

Moulin Hotel

Have been staying at the Moulin for nearly 10 years on an annual basis and I feel after the last stay that it is becoming a cash cow and the guests are being used.

The rooms are ok but the bathroom was shabby, the corridors have also seen better days.

Always eat in the bar at the Moulin and the food is pretty good, however, it is very hard to find a seat and although the staff always say they have a quick turnover that wasn't the case on Friday and as guests we ended up by the pool table on two bar stools. Staff do tend to rush you through, meals arrive very quickly with no breather in between. Good selection of whisky but dreadful selection of wine. Agree with other reviews, Moulin Ale is great but staff no nothing about it.

Breakfast took ages to arrive the next morning and the waitress was horrendously rude when I asked how long it would be after waiting 30 mins for a simple Scottish breakfast.

Check out was ok, a lovely guy who helps in the morning is so cheerful but the lady on reception was very snippy and quite rude, she clearly didn't have any training in customer service.

“Beware the "offers"”

Moulin Hotel

Just returned from a stay at the Moulin just outside Pitlochry.

Positives - food was good, they certainly know how to cook a steak.

Their own beer is good especially the 'Old Remedial'.

Negatives - Decor looking very tired especially in the restaurant.

We were given a discount on our room which was based on DBB.

When we arrived we asked if we could eat from the a la carte to be told yes and that the allowance was £20. Both my wife and I proceeded to have fillet steaks on the first night, there is a disclaimer on the fixed menu saying that there is a £5 supplement for a fillet steak, but we expected the £20 allowance (the cost of the fixed menu) to apply, especially when the £110 we paid per night was broken down on the bill to £70 accom and £40 food.

I had a fillet steak on night 2 also, then when we went to check out and found the supplements of £15.

The manager/owner said that we had been given a discount on the room therefore he felt justified in charging us the supplement. The owner was arrogant and said that this was the first time this had been questioned - I think not.

“Our Favourite Hotel”

Moulin Hotel

We first came across the Moulin Hotel, some years ago, while out walking on one of the many walks around Pitlochry, while staying in our Caravan at our friend's farm , at the nearby village of Balnaguard. As we were a bit mucky from our hiking, we did not go into the Hotel at that time, but decided to look on the Internet when we returned home for more information about the Moulin.
We liked what we saw, and on a later stay in the Caravan, we had a Bar Lunch in the Hotel's Bothy Bar. We were impressed by both the Quality and Quantity of the food and Drink, and particulary liked the idea that the owner, Chris had, of selecting a Malt Whisky as the " Malt of the Month", and selling it at £ 2.50 for a large Measure , as was the price then.
The Bothy Bar is very homely and has two roaring fires, particularly appealing on a cold day. On Hogmany , ( New Years Eve), while we were staying again at the farm we went back for Lunch again, and booked Valentines weekend on the Hotel Web site, when we got home for the following year.
We had a great weekend. The cost then was £ 45 per person, for D.B. & B., a price you will not beat for Value for money. The following year we had another Valentines weekend at the Moulin, and then treated two close friends form Biggin Hill in Kent to a weekend the following Ocotber. The Weather was fantastic for Scotland in October , and we took them all over the area used by the BBC for their " Monarch of the Glen " TV series as thet were fans of that, and they were so impressed with the Moulin that they told friends in San Francisco about it.
Peter particularly liked tha fact that the hotel sold "Edradour ,( the smallest Distillery in the world, and two miles away), Cask Strength Malt.
That December, although we could not get booked at the Moulin, we treated my Best Man's Wife and him, to Lunch and Dinner at the Moulin, and they were also very impressed with it.
We will be back for Lunch this New Year's eve, and when we are at Dunkeld Timeshare next February for a week, we will be back for Lunch or Dinner.
The Moulin Hotel is easy to find. In Pitlochry Main Street , turn up the hill at the Moulin Road, also signposted Braemar, and go right up, over the roundabout to Moulin Village. The Hotel is almost the last Building , ( and also one of the highest ), in Pitlochry, and is on the Left side of the road.
We would recomend it for either a Bar Lunch, a full Hotel Lunch or Dinner or an overnight stay.
