I have nothing against this hotel, they didn't do anything to upset me, so this review is as objective as I can make it.
First of all the room was filthy, there was still rubbish in the wardrobes and stains all over the shelves. The bathroom was covered in mould and the shower curtain did nothing to stop all the shower water pouring all over the floor. They pride themselves on the four poster beds in each room, however a creaky old badly made pine bed with falling off garish tartan curtains hardly made for a good nights sleep.
Now the room was the best bit, the restaurant was like something out of Ramsay's kitchen nightmares. There were 3 menus served by the one kitchen, the bar, the restaurant and also the dinner bed and breakfast menu. Between them I'd say there were a total of nearly 30 main courses available. Considering we were the only people in the restaurant (this is a June weekend!!) there is absolutely no way that the food can be made from fresh ingredients. Not only that but it tasted awful. All the cuttlery on the table was filthy, we looked on the other tables for clean tableware but could not find anything clean to replace it. The bar food did look a bit better at least, after all they can't go too wrong surely with sticking a few chips on the side of a microwaved meal? However the bar suffered from the kind of lingering air of decay that makes you wish that there was no smoking ban so at least the musty smell would be disguised.
This place is not cheap either, clearly benefitting from the high number of tourists in Pitlochry without having to bother about actually providing any kind of decent service. We did, by the way, mention the cleanliness of the room when we checked out, we might as well have complained to one of the empty beer barrels stacked outside the brewery for all the interest this provoked.
Stay away from this hotel, Athol palace hotel isn't that much more money..
