Scottish Borders

We stayed at the Moulin Hotel about 5 years ago and had the opportunity of a night in the Pitlochry area so didn't hesitate to book again. We had a superior room with slightly dated decor but it was very spacious, warm, clean and comfy with a lovely deep cast iron bath with endless hot water.

We ate in the bar and had a very relaxing evening drinking the local real ale and enjoying the local food and conversations that we had with other customers. We were a bit dissapointed by the lack of fresh veg with our meals and the Verakie Grostel (a dish of sauted potates with bacon) was a bit bland, but there were plenty of choice on the menu so we would try something else next time. Service was efficient and our two border collies were made welcome and offered water by the waiting staff.

Breakfast (traditional cooked Scottish) was freshly cooked and quick to arrive with probably the best smoked bacon we have ever had.

“If you like good food, good real ale and are not a snob”

Stayed for 2 nights DBB and the deal inc flowers (at least £20 worth), bottle of champagne, 3 bottles of Athol Ale bottle conditioned, fudge etc in the room, free glass of wine with diner, liquers after diner on both nights. Breakfast was excellent.

The staff were very polite and professional but not overbearing. Nothing was a problem for them. The dining room ran very well and was busy.

The bar with its own real ales and cosy real fires is a treat in itself. Try finding a seat or coming in at the last minute and expecting to get a meal ordered is a long shot. There must be something about the place that brings back a large number of repeat customers.

To be honest I dare say the rooms could do with a spruce up but for a 300 year old drovers Inn I did expect the floorboards to creek and I didn’t expect double glazing. Admittedly the could be a wee bit new silicone added around the shower screen and the hose for the shower could be a tad longer but the rooms were clean and tidy and certainly fresh.

Did I enjoy my stay at a 300 year old Inn renowned for good food and real ale? Yes.

Did I expect a 5 star hotel? No.

Will I be going back again? Try holding me back.

This was our second stay at the Moulin for the winter warmer break. We stayed there last year for my 50th birthday and the staff were very helpful, the food was very good, plenty of choice for the five days we were there and at least we could have a laugh with the staff. We had a superior room.

The bar food has not changed but how many choices do you need, all the dishes we tried were very tasty.

We had a standard room this time which was large and spacious, clean and tidy.

We love the open fires and the Real Ale. So why would you want to spoil an old drover's Inn.

We have booked to go again next year and look forward to going back.

“Snuggly stay at the Moulin”

Moulin Hotel

We came to stay at the Moulin after a recommendation from a friend and we were not let down at all. Although we agree that the hotel desperately needs updating (the common rooms look like something from an old peoples home!) we found the rooms clean, the food fantastic and the staff extremely friendly. We stayed on a Sunday and Monday (DB&B) so naturally the place was quiet and we were one of two parties eating dinner. However we both agreed that even though quiet we felt relaxed and well looked after and our three course meal was delicious (and we are good cooks and fussy eaters who spend lots of time eating out). the weather was so bad during our stay that we ended up spending the Monday afternoon drinking Moulin Ale in front of the open fires and trying out some of the bar food (also very good). On the second night we asked if we would be the only ones in the restaurant (we were) and if then we could eat in the bothy bar. The chef came out to talk to us personally and said this would be fine. When we came down to eat a table in the bar had been set up for us and was quite romantic - we again ejoyed the lovely food from the restaurant menu.
For 2 nights DB&B including 2 bottles of wine and a round of drinks we paid £230 which we felt was very reasonable and we have come away from our stay really pleased with the Moulin. If some time and money was spent on updating the hotel (leave the bar alone!) then this would have been near enough perfect.

We took my partner's parents here to celebrate a birthday and I was embarrassed to have chosen this hotel.
The rooms are grotty and depressing. Whoever decorated them should've gone to Specsavers first. The overall appearance of the hotel is shabby and crying out for a good spruce up. The food was bland and unappetising and was very overpriced. My partner ordered a starter of local smoked meats and was presented with four small slices of meat....at a cost of £7. He also suffered a bad pint of ale later that evening.
Don't fall for the website patter or you will be very disappointed. It's a shame, because it promises so much and delivers so little. This hotel should be advertised for what it is - cheap and nasty.
The hotel's only saving grace was the bar area with open fires, but even they could be doing with a bit of a clean.
I agree with the previous review - this hotel sums up all that is wrong with the Scottish hotel industry!!
