“Just overnight stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2013

Only quick visit. Hotel a bit strange. Public areas very old fashioned, rooms contemporary and spacious. Could turn heating down and windows wouldn't open. Reception unmanned in evening and after waiting had to get waiter from restaurant

Room Tip: Room on north & east sides adjacent to busy road

The hotels décor is tired and depressing and there were some very peculiar smells in parts of the building. The direction signs to the rooms are inadequate and it took a long time to find my room.... when I did, boy was I disappointed. It was the smallest single room I've seen, was dark and uninviting. The door lock was difficult to open, and the shower room was teeny. Bed, shower etc were all clean though.

The staff were all friendly and helpful.

The biggest disappointment of all was the food. Our dinner was one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had. We had to get the water jug changed three times before it was clean and free of debris. One of the drinking glasses was chipped. The food itself was marginally above inedible!!!!

Not a place to revisit!!

Average says it all about the room, food, service and decor, i would suggest that you ask to see your room before you accept it.

The set menu is cooked at the start of service so eat early if you want a reasonable quality meal.

Have just returned from a weekend at the Scotland Hotel and we were gobsmacked it was so nice. We never expected it to be after reading trip advisor very bad reviews but as it was a 60th birthday present for my husband we had no choice but to go but I am glad we did. The staff the rooms the food and the chat were excellent. I am a very fussy person and like things to be nice and I would not complain about this hotel everything was so clean and tidy.

Room Tip: We know the hotel had been refurbished a refurbished room but don't know if they all had been so...

we stayed here one night as part of a 2 week tour of scotland, and this was the worst accommodation , and 2nd most expensive. The furnishings in the hotel are tired and dated, and our room was no better. The en-suite was pretty shabby, and our view out of the window which faced internally , was of a sloping extension roof, carpeted in cigarette butts and the kitchen.
We needed a fairly early night,(10.30pm) but the extension outside the window adjoined the next door bar where there was live music, which continued to nearly midnight. We complained to reception, with no effect. I feel we should have been warned that our room would suffer significant noise when there was music in the bar next door (which was also owned by the hotel) and offered an alternative room.
At breakfast the next morning, one tea cup laid out was absolutely crusted in filth. Only a blind man could have missed it when it was laid up by the staff. The scrambled egg was horrible, with greyish lumps in it, and a tasteless texture. We sent it back when we eventually found a waiter.
We did fill out a feedback form to advise of our problems when we left, but the receptionist was totally disinterested . We haven't had a response to that , but based on this visit , and that it represented poor value for money, we would never stay here again, and would not recommend it to anyone else .

We stayed at the Scotland's Hotel for 3 nights from the 17th June. Our 3rd stay , had a couple of minor issues before but wanted to give the hotel another try.
The room was spotless with a rather entertaining slope in the floor, running into the loo from the bedroom. Caused much hilarity bouncing around the room with one leg in your trousers , trying to stay balanced ! This wasn't a problem really as the building is 300 years old so there is bound to be wee issues. We had a lovely view of the hills and could hear the church bells.
The staff are so hard working, from the maids to the restaurant/bar staff. Always smiling and helpful.
The leisure facilities were fab , clean and not to busy.
We were booked in DB&B , the food was lovely though my hubbys portions of lamb and on another night venison were miniscule ! The trout was delicious . I would have liked to have seen some of the great local strawberries in the deserts.
Breakfast was really nice, the haggis is to die for , yummy !
Thanks again for a great stay Donald and staff, we will be back before the years out.
