Pitlochry golf club is a fantastically friendly and enjoyable place to play a round of golf but to have stayed on site for a week right bang in the middle of a heat wave just elevates the experience beyond your wildest dreams. Our family of five enjoyed our second stay in Drumchorry Cottage which sits by the side of the second fairway just a chip and run from the second green and affords wonderous views down the Tummel valley towards picturesque clubhouse and the countryside beyond.
With four golfers in the party this really was a perfect place to stay, unlimited golf for all of us for £200 for the week, fantastic value and afforded us the opportunity to play just a few holes in the morning or around our other activities or to take in a full round. We averaged 27 holes a day starting as early as six am and finishing as late as 10:30 pm.
The golf course is a gem, yes it is hilly to start with, the first certainly gets the blood pumping as you climb upto the green, take a while to get your breath and enjoy the view. The second is a little less of an effort and the third, well a gentle slope really. From there on in it is a stroll in the park, not flat but no climbs of any nature to cause any concerns. The views all round are just fabulous. It may not be the longest of courses but do not be fooled, you should plot your way around and limit the use of the big stick and aim to place your ball in the right place to give yourself access to the pins. Try to avoid approaches over bunkers as many of the greens have severe drop offs and catch the slopes and you will see your ball disappear. The greens were in great condition, you could get a good roll but they are not fast but very true. Not a par 5 in sight, until the planned re routed second comes to fruition, three excellent par 3's and par 4's that can be reached with a drive, well a few but don't be fooled, placement is the key to good scoring. This really is a gem of a course with outstanding views at every turn.
The clubhouse is befitting of the location, a very pretty standout building with its shiny red roof that looks old and antiquated, but inside it is a modern, clean and airy environment that has a warm and welcoming atmosphere generated by the friendly staff who could not be more approachable. The food is very good indeed, a great place to enjoy your after round drinks or a meal with your family, indeed the clubhouse is very well supported by golfers and visitors alike and always seemed to have a steady business on going.
The pro shop carries a good range of clothing and equipment and the staff led by Mark Pirie are very friendly and always available for a chat.
This is the second time we have stayed at the course and I first visited back in 1989 and have returned most years since, the improvement to the course is significant and it is now in fabulous condition, the course will always suffer from the elements bearing in mind it's location but it is now cared for, as it should be. Infact everything about the venue is first class and oozes professionalism and friendliness and is a model for how clubs should be run in the present climate. The team at Pitlochry from green staff, professionals and all who work in the clubhouse should be congratulated on what they have achieved and the service they provide andthe members who are so friendly you feel amongst friends should be very proud of their home club.
