The Poplars is in a lovely position about ten minutes walk from the town centre. The gardens are beautifully kept and the house is charming with some beautiful pieces of antique furniture and objets d'art.
Sadly my room with its tired decor, too small a tv and hard pillows let this B & B down. I got a lovely warm welcome and the breakfast was excellent. The room was adequate but unremarkable; it was disappointing to have the loo and shower en-suite but the washbasin in the room. I could only find one electrical socket and this had a two-way adaptor serving the lamp, tv, heater and kettle. The tea tray and kettle were on the dressing table by this socket so it wasn't at all convenient for using a hairdryer.
Breakfast in the beautiful dining room was definitely the highlight of my overnight stay. There was a huge choice of cereals, fresh and tinned fruit and juices, yoghurts etc. and the cooked breakfast really was lovely with excellent coffee.. Gerry was a charming host who made sure he spoke to all the guests during breakfast.
I chose to stay at The Poplars based on other reviews I read, so i'm really disappointed to say I felt I didn't really get four star value.
