“Basic and Expensive”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2012

I stayed at this hotel recently and though the staff were friendly there seems to be a mix up about the cost per night. Even though their own website states that this hotel will charge £135 for a twin room for 2 nights and we were quoted this when booking, when checking out the price double!. There is no way in this world that this hotel is worth £60 per person a night. The décor is that of a retirement home, the rooms have no heat and if there is a function, dance or party on just forget about sleeping. Apart from the mix-up in the price the staff were very friendly but just don't expect any breakfast if you are ten minutes too late which I understand but really at the price I was expected to pay breakfast should have been available all day.

The price was £60 per person per night and that is fairly standard of a room in August in the centre of Perth. With the Edinburgh Fringe festival on, the Golf at Gleneagles and the August Monday bank holiday, the price was always going to be full rate. The rooms were booked in March and the price was agreed then, we had regular contact with you in the lead up to your arrival about numbers changing, the tariff and outstanding balance. If you had a query about the price it should have been brought up earlier.

Like most other hotels we do offer deals in quieter times. Prices are subject to change depending on what's on in Perth. We have to capitalise when there's events on like T in the park, Perth Races, 80s Rewing festival otherwise we wouldn't be a business.

The heating wasn't switched on as it was August. However, it would not have been a problem for us to put it on - if you had just asked. We always prefer guests to bring up any issues they have with their stay while they are actually staying with us. Writing them online afterwards is unfair and damaging.

We have 13 bedrooms at the hotel and a large function room. The weddings and functions are a big part of our business. It is unfortunate that some of the bedrooms are near the function room. The weddings and parties are mostly at the weekends and we always have the music turned off by 12.30am.

Breakfast finishes at 9.30am on weekdays. The 1 guest who came down at 9.45am was offered tea and toast and the breakfast cereals, juices and yoghurts were still available on the cold buffet table. We had actually switched everything off in the kitchen and cleaning had begun - the cooked option was not available for that reason.

We had other guests staying that weekend paying the same price as yourselves with no complaints about the price, music or heating.

just back from a very enjoyable few days at the grampian. the room had everything we needed including a very comfy bed. we had made no plans for excursions during our stay but on the recommendation of the owner duncan we had a lovely day out at the local horse racing course. duncans wife claire was excellent at picking us restaurants to eat in at nights, the one occasion we ate in the hotel it was up to the high standards of the local restaurants. we left knowing the names of all the staff they were that friendly and we look forward to seeing them again one day.

Stayed in this Hotel for one night and that was enough. The cost of the one night's stay was drastcally increased from £80 on a normal Saturday to £130 which is a huge mark up if you ask me. It appears they were taking advantage of the Perth horse racing being on at the time of our stay. Was the hotel worth the price, nothing could justify this price, i have stayed in better hotels which cost half the price of this one and were much better all round. I read some of the comments left by previous guests who have stayed at the Grampian, and having stayed there myself i thought they must have been talking about a different hotel.
The room was basic, dated (although in the booklet in the room it says it was upgraded but that was in 2007) and very noisy!!! Even with the windows fully closed the noise of speeding taxis / traffic going by all night was enough to keep anyone awake. If that was not enough to put one off then there was the noise from the thumping music being played downstairs untill 3.45am in the morning, so between the two not a wink of sleep all night. Would i stay there again, perhaps not.

Saturday 18th August was the only Saturday meeting at Perth Racecourse. The demand for rooms was high and we could have sold the hotel a few times over. With empty rooms in the winter time - we really have to make sure we get full rate when there are events on.

All of the guests staying with us (apart from 1 gentleman - who was going to a wedding) were going to the racing.

We often have owners, trainers & jockeys staying with us when the racing is on and the hotel is lively with a great atmosphere and we keep the bar open later for residents.

We never received any complaints from guests staying that night about the music or noise.

Stayed leave with 4 others on a business trip, arrived to late to eat but the owners booked us a table at a local restaurant.
Hotel is close to town centre, owners were lovely and most helpful, Rooms are clean and tidy tea, coffee and biscuits provided, bathrooms clean and tidy but a little dated. Due to our group having to leave early next day the owner opened his kitchen to accomodate us cooking us breakfast. Can't recommend this hotel enough

We stayed for two nights and had a room at the front (no road noise thanks to double-glazing) the room was fair size but there was no wardrobe - just hangers on the wall! The en suite bathroom was compact and efficent and the room was generally clean and tidy with TV and tea/coffee facilities and local tourist magazines. Breakfast was substantial and perfectly fine and we enjoyed it in the front conservatory area. There is a lounge bar which tended to shut quite early so don't expect a nightcap. At the back they have a large function room which I would expect could create some noise when there's a party on but we had no hassle. Parking is limited at the front but other spaces appeared to be available nearby especially at weekends. The hotel is within easy walking distancew of the bus and railway stations and a short stroll down to the City centre. Overall The Grampain is very acceptable and we would consider using it again.

Room Tip: Check if your room has a wardrobe!!

i arrived here on a friday evening for 8 nights working. Was greeted by Claire the owner and checked in. I stayed in room 14, the room was quiet small but the bed was comfortable and clean. The quilt was a tad too small for the bed but as i was alone it was ok.

The only downside to the room was a dirty bathroom. The shower screen has not be cleaned for a while and there was mildew all around with dirty skirting boards. Some work collegues were also staying and they had no issues.

free wifi, which was fast and stable. The biggest plus to this hotel is the friendlness of the staff which more than made up for any complaints.

I never ate in the hotel so can't comment on the food.

overall a comfortable stay.....
