Owner description: Elcho Castle is one of Scotland's best-preserved 16th-century tower houses. It was built around the time of the Protestant Reformation in 1560 by a member of the family of Wemyss of that Ilk. The family could trace their lineage back to the 12th century. A descendant of the builder of Elcho was created Lord Wemyss of Elcho in 1628 and Earl of Wemyss in 1633.

“Nice place to visit and have a picnic too!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2012

Elcho Castle is well restored and a lovely place to visit. You can go into every room and even climb out onto the roof!
The grounds, including an orchard are well kept and it is a lovely place for a picnic (on the odd day when Scotland is sunny and warm!)

“Free to EH members”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2012

A great castle and you can go out on the roof. The orchard is looking the worse for not being pruned this year and the grass is right up against the trees. Quarry garden looks like no one has taken care of it all year. Helpful staff

“Saw the signpost and glad we went”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2012

We were headed back south from a day in Perth swimming pool and saw the sign to the castle. It's delightful! The member of staff got my kids dressed up and equipped with quizzes and we charged around counting the number of "long drops". Lovely views and friendly staff.
