“Great cakes and friendly staff!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2014 via mobile

I visited the bothy on the 10th of January with a friend and my young son. We were greeted with a friendly welcome and told we could choose where we wanted to sit. I chose the quieter part through the back incase my son was noisy. We all decided on hot chocolates that were amazing and they did a childs size one which was great. I had a chocolate brownie that was to die for and my friend had a gluten free dime bar slice. Quite often gluten free can taste a bit dry or tastless but not this one it was gorgeous.
The waiting staff were very good with my wee boy and chatted away with us all. Will defenitely be coming back :)

“Better service in Elgin Mcdonald's, go there instead!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2014

First time I've been and won't be back! When we arrived we weren't welcomed, in fact basically ignored with the staff just looking at us then looking away. We should of left then but with two hungry children in tow decided to stay. After about a minute of this I decided to take it upon myself seen as the staff weren't bothering, to ask if there was any tables available to be told "eh I don't know", then another waitress told our waitress there was tables round the back, so we walk round and sit at a table.

We had just sat down and only just started looking at the menu when the waitress came to take our order!! At this point I asked if they did half portions for children as there was no kids menu to be told she doesn't know again and she would ask the kitchen. She then goes away to come back two minutes later, she takes our order and at this point I asked about the half portions for my son as he wanted the fish which she knew but wait for it she hadn't asked!!! She comes back again and tells us the kitchen won't make up a half portion for my son. Ridiculous considering this place is good for kids according to Facebook! We then decided my son could share our meals and she went away with our order, then she comes back and tells us there is no pancakes which my daughter had ordered. This was after I had ordered the Cullen Skink which she didn't even know was on the menu by the way (I had to point it out). That was the last straw and I told her we would be leaving which we did.

Terrible from start to finish. Not welcoming in the slightest, awful service and management seriously need to train their staff because our waitress was completely clueless! I can't comment on the food because we never had any!

Thank you for registering with Tripadvisor solely to post your 'TERRIBLE' comment about The Bothy:

We asked our 4,700 Facebook followers whether they agree that The Bothy is 'Terrible'

Customer 1: OMG it's so not true ,I give it full marks,x

Customer 2: Unfortunately, there are those who will always complain. I have always enjoyed every visit to the Bothy.

Customer 3: I never trust trip advisor. i visited the bothy a few weeks ago and it was clean friendly funky and had a nice well priced bowl of cullen skink!!:)))

Customer 4: I have only been to the Bothy once, and thoroughly enjoyed every part of the experience. Don't listen to professional complainers....there is always someone out there who likes to cause problems. It is probably competition and they are jealous!! x

Customer 5: There's always one. I don't think it's fair to say never Trust Tripadvisor. If you read all the reviews you get a fair idea of what to expect. As I said, there's always one who has to slag the place off, wherever it is. We always look on Tripadvisor when we go on holiday and there is always someone who advises you never to go there because it's soooooo bad, but generally speaking, we always have a great holiday. Some people just like to spread poison.

Customer 6: It is only one person's opinion so really not that important :)

Customer 7: I love the Bothy, Even when a seagull pooed in my drink the lovely friendly staff got me a new one straight away and our pizza was fab! Will definitiely be back.

Customer 8: I Quite regularly go to the Bothy for a Pizza and or ice-cream :) and I Love it! I also really like the theme Night's the food is always fantastic and I like everything about it also all the different stuff you sell. To be able to go somewhere that's a 5min walk from my house or a 30 second drive in the car is just bliss after always having to travel a few to 10miles it's just great to be able to nip down the road and get parked right out-side! X

Customer 9: Well some people are never pleased so just ignore them I love the food there thankyou

Customer 10: Food is great we fair enjoy it :-) xx

Customer 11: My smoked salmon salad and homemade chips were to die for so so good well worth a visit.

12: My jaw dropped reading this! What absolute rubbish!!! Your place is brill ! Can't wait to visit again! X

Customer 13: I'm making a return visit tomorrow night to your Indian evening. I am sure it will be fabulous - I will certainly leave a review on TripAdvisor - but I will also say it to you in person :-)

Customer 14: My daughter and I go to the Bothy a lot :-) :-)

We would rather go there than most places in Elgin! It's always clean! food has always been lovely :-) the home made soup is always delicious :-) the home made chips and garlic mayo are to die for! :-). Prices are good, and the staff have always been friendly! :-) oh, and the specials are brilliant! :-) That nasty person is talking absolute rubbish :-( :-(

Customer 15: DRIVEL Honest to goodness theres no pleasing some folk, but your regulars know how good you really are !

Customer 16: hubby and me ate there last month and cant wait to go back, its a lovely eating experience, great tip top food, lovely staff, very clean and prices equivalent to any hotel or restaurant,

Customer 17: Omg ! So not true

Customer 18: ??? They must be confused! I've enjoyed coming to the bothy & still salivate at the thought of those amazing prawns :-)

Customer 19: I have heard that competition will post fake reviews on Tripadvisor - it sounds as if you might be getting too popular for some... We always enjoyed our visits when we lived in Elgin! Good luck - keep up the good work!

Customer 20: Well those reviews are rubbish! We go to the Bothy often and love the extension, the garden, the service too, and have attempted to try all the weekend specials, which have all been fantastic, as was the seafood special evening. (Wow). Looking forward to the Indian food. Perhaps it was a different Bothy? Perhaps they have no taste buds?

Customer 21: Really fancied the Indian nite but it's on a school night & we live to far away .....how bout one on a weekend , fri Love the bothy.....lovely place

Customer 22: Always been proud to take our family, friends & visitors to you guys. Superb.

Customer 23: The Bothy rocks - staff are fab, food is noshtastic, decor is heavenly and we absolutely love it!!! Ignore the spineless numpties who don't have the backbone to complain direct!!! xxx

Customer 24: i must have missed that day

Customer 25: Love to visit while in the area. Trip advisor is a joke and always will be. Never use it for any purpose and unsure what sane person would as so open to abuse. You have a wonderful place. Great food with great service ... Now stick that on Trip advisor !!!!

Customer 26: I would advise every body to completely ignore such comment.

My wife and I come home to Lossiemouth every year from Canada for our 6 week holiday and visit the Bothy quite a few times and love it. We have never been disappointed with any thing. But we do miss out on the special functions. Long may you stay open.

Customer 27: I was at the bothy yesterday and can quite honestly say that Tripadvisor has been misinformed. Cullen Skink was delicious, staff helpful and friendly and decor very homely. Will certainly go again!

Customer 28: Oh.my.god. ?? Well I recommend The Bothy to everyone .. Who needs trip advisor!

Look's like you are in the minority! Enjoy your next visit to McDonalds and when you are finished eating please don't throw the packaging out of the car window in the countryside like some Mcdonalds customers like to do!

“Friendly cafe and great food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2014

Unlike some other recent reviewers, we came here for lunch and received exceptionally friendly service, including answering all our questions about local history and culture. The food was of excellent quality and good value. Good to see inventive vegetarian options. We took home some cheese scones which were also very tasty.
The cafe holds the key for the Pictish well and this is a fascinating place to visit. Unfortunately, the main visitor centre (with a pictish stone carving of a boar) does not open in Winter.
We would highly recommend a visit to Burghead and this gem of a cafe.

“A bit disappointed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2014 via mobile

We were really looking forward to our second visit to the bothy, and we were quite disappointed with it overall.

Firstly, we were sat right by the door which caused a draft. We felt an inconvenience as we asked to move.

Our Sunday roasts weren't particularly hot when they arrived, and we were quite surprised at the 'frozen' undercooked chips that came as a side to my husbands meal. Real potato chips aren't that hard to do.
One member of staff in particular was not very friendly.

Overall, disappointed with our visit.
