Having just returned from a short stay at The Golf View Hotel it was simply fantastic.
First impressions, the place was lovely, over looking the beach. Nairn is a lovely quiet little town.
The receptionist was very friendly and helpful. We got to our room which was superb, it had a huge 4 poster bed, jacuzzi and shower in large bathroom. The decor was rich and very comfortable. We then had a few drinks in the bar which we took outside into the glorious sunshine.
We later ate in the conservatory, the menu had a great choice of dishes and the food was delicious.
Breakfast is served until 10am in the dining room.
Could not fault a thing, the hotel, staff, location, food, room.. all excellent 10/10
Many Thanks I will definately be back

We spent Easter weekend here on a D,B&B basis with 2 children under 5 in a family room. This was our first visit and first impressions were good . There are great views from the hotel and the location suited us. The room was ideal for our purposes. We found the staff to be polite, helpful and attentive although they were clearly short handed for breakfast one day.The pool was clean and tidy and ideal for us but not for anyone wanting to put in some lengths .We ate in the conservatory and found the food to be generally of a high standard but they are not going to win a michelin star. Re the previous review I agree the 6-6-6 table d'hote menu could have been more varied but in my view you are better having a few things done reasonably well than too large a choice done badly. If there were specials they were never offered. We would definitely recommend it for a family break based on our experience and will be back.

“New Ownership -- Falling Standards”

Golf View Hotel

Mar 11, 2007
4/4 found this review helpful

My wife and I have just returned from a short break at the Golf View -- the latest of many visits to this hotel during the last 30 years. We were shocked to find that standards have plummeted since our last visit 3 months ago. The hotel is now under new ownership and appears to be seriously short-staffed; particularly in the Kitchen. The housekeeping / facilities standards are reasonable, but the most noticeable change was the decline in Restaurant standards.

The wide ranging a la carte menu has gone -- completely. The only offering is a 6+6+6 table d'hote menu that, we understand, runs unchanged for 2 weeks. That's it. That's your lot. Take it or leave it.
A discussion with the Chef indicated that a limited number of "specials" are available every night, but they were never offered and the staff didn't know anything about them. The prices are such that it is also very difficult to see how one can select a 3 course dinner from the menu within the 20GBP allowance that is included in the room rate. I was even charged extra for the chips (French fries) that I ordered with my steak.

Even though we were on inclusive DBB rates we were so disappointed with the restaurant that we decided to abandon the unchanging offerings at the Golf View and dine at the Newton Hotel along the road. No refund was made.

As on previous visits, we found the restaurant standards at the Newton Hotel to be excellent with a wide ranging menu that offered reasonable value for money. It did a lot to relieve our disappointment.

For 30 years we have recommended the Golf View to family and friends. This morning we left our favourite hotel feeling very sad and disappointed, and with the impression that we had been blatantly ripped off by an hotel that is trading on its past record.

On our next visit to Nairn we will be staying at the Newton Hotel.

It is nine months since the previous review so an up date may be useful. Firstly this is no longer the Swallow Golf View Hotel. Swallow went in to receivership, and although the hotel is trading under new ownership it is now simply the Golf View Hotel. The hotel has a prime location by the sea front in Nairn. It is well presented and furnished and has lots of comfortable seating in the public areas. Our room was splendid - large four poster, comfortable sofa to watch TV, a selection of DVDs to rent if we wished, a very well appointed bath room (with Moulton Brown toiletries) and stunning views across the Moray Firth. There is ample parking and the hotel is within walking distance of the town. There were a couple of down sides however. The food was only average - an ambitious menu was not terribly well executed, although the conservatory restaurant is pleasant enough and will be a great place to eat on a summers evening. The best meal we had was fish and chips - more exotic offerings were not great. The second problem was the staff. Not that they were not interested when you found them - it was that there were so few of them. This may have been something to do with the fact that the hotel was being handed over to the new owners while we were there, but we repeatedly had to find someone to serve us with drinks or food, and indeed when we arrived we had to wander off into the hotel to find some one to check us in. There is a leisure centre which we saw from afar - although we did not use the pool it appeared well kept. So all in all a mixed review, however we would give them another chance in the hope that food improves and they improve the staff/guest ratio. On the basis of our visit I do recommend it but take heed of the warnings about food and staff in case they have not improved.

I stayed here for a Valentine's weekend. Our room had a four poster bed, and a jacuzzi in the bathroom. The views of the sea from our room were stunning and the hotel was really comfortable with friendly staff. The food was very impressive, and the dining room also looked over the sea. We didn't use the gym, but did swim in the pool which was very nice. Nairn itself is quite a quiet little place but there are nice beach walks and the weather was very pleasent for February. I would recommend the hotel for a nice break for couples, probably good if you have a car for touring around. The hotel definately exceeded my expectations and we both had an absolutely fantastic weekend. The only negative comment I can come up with was that the dining room furniture is wicker and therefore the chairs are really uncomfortable! Apart from that it was a lovely place to spend a weekend.
