“What a shame...”

Glenmoriston Arms Hotel

We visited the Glen Morriston Arms, in the Highlands in September of last year and had the most wonderful, friendly welcome. Nick was fantastic and so were the staff. On the first day we were offered use of everything from golf clubs to fishing passes by Nick, he could not have been any more generous. The menu was to die for and the cosiness of the room and breakfast in bed was the cherry on the cake. We were treated as family! Along with the beautiful surroundings we couldnt wait to return.
So for my 30th my fiance surprised me and took me back to the Glen Morriston Arms, he booked it through Lewis and was assured we would be looked after in the same way and as we were staying 6 nights there they would give us a good deal.
When we drove in we were welcomed by Lewis, assistant manager and Graham, the head chef. Without these two we would have left that night. The menu had been halved as had the bar choice, and the atmosphere had been transformed - you could clearly see that the staff no longer enjoyed working there due to the same fact that we did not enjoy our stay there - a new owner.
We could only laugh when we realised that he had carried on living off of Nick n Hazels established reputation and presentation of the hotel that Keith did not deserve the credit for, on the website and at the hotel. (I might add that they had mearly crossed off their names of the business cards to replace them with his and his wifes names.) Although Graham very kindly prepared some of the meals especially for us - i agree with the other reviews it was very over priced. Keith had decided to scrap the idea of the breakfast in bed which had automatically come with the four poster bedroom previously and was "thinking" about replacing it with a champagne breakfast, we however never experianced this so we can only imagine this was along with everything else he had to say, a load of rubbish. This is a man who unlike Nick who used to chat with everyone with interest, purely loved the sound of his own voice and was full of such self importance it was sickening. He talked at you not with you.
He further irritated us on the last morning when he said with such pleasure "ooh wait to you see your bill..." It was certainly not worth the money we paid and the way he spoke to his staff in front of guests was atrocious. We felt very uncomfortable. Lewis left whilst we were there and we think it was the best thing he could have done. I hope the other staff followed suit as they certainly deserved to. We only hope that Keith gets bored with his hobby and lets people more suitable take over.
What a shame Nick and Hazel had to leave as we would have returned again this September. We were so dissappointed with the change and only wish that everyone else who visits the Glen Morriston Arms had the chance to enjoy it at its peak like we did.
It is blatantly obvious that Keith does not have the skills to be in a customer facing environment and should stick to selling packaged goods for Marks & Spencers.

The hotel itself is in a good location and the rooms are fine - overpriced I would say for what you get, but that was the least of it!

We were greeted and checked in by a young woman so the poor and rude service we received at this point we put down to inexperience and were vaugely amused by the whole thing, laughing at the time at how it reminded us of Faulty Towers. Over the course of the next 3 nights the service got progressively worse to the point that it was no longer funny, just incredibly rude.

There are many examples, but to give just one....on the second night I had a smoke alarm bleeping outside my room all night, presumably just a fading battery. In the morning I mentioned this politely to the owner, who barely acknowledged my comment and certainly made no attempt to apologise for a sleepless night. He did say he would fix it, as you would expect. That night, I went to bed and the smoke alarm was still bleeping. I went down to request it was fixed and was greeted by a tirade of abuse from the wife and the owner who accused me of being rude, presumably because i had distrubed them at 10pm! The smoke alarm was fixed but with much grumbling.

We would have checked out after the first night were it not for the fact that there was a major mountain bike event on in the area and all accomodation was taken!

Poor customer service aside, the restaurant and bar are completely characterless, the food is passable, but we found much better places (and cheaper!).

I read the other reviews before booking and was influenced by the positive ones - i can only recommend that you heed this advise and steer well clear!

We remember this guest with great fondness. The young girl that is being mention is in fact well trained and very well thought of by the majority of our guests.Regarding the alarm the guest informed us that the alarm was bleeping outside room 2 which the maintenance man changed. He then came down the following night at 2045hrs not 2200hrs as he stated only to inform us that the alarm was still bleeping and he was trying to sleep , in fact he had informed us of the wrong alarm the previous night. The alarm was sorted straight away.
It rather sad when comments are made like this as the staff went out their way to make there stay a good one but sometimes we feel guests should look at there own behaviour when talking to staff and give them some respect and not treat them like second class human beings .This is what happened in this situation this guest was rude from the moment they arrived until their departure.

On arrival at the hotel we were not greeted, only advised the kitchen was closed even though we had phoned and advised we would be arriving and would want to eat. After some discussion we were told we could eat but it had to be NOW and only one course - how gracious.

The staff could really do with some customer service training and I found the owner overbearing and wanting to chat constantly. Some people may want this but our party did not and an owner should realise this. We had 2 rooms between us and one was very nice, the other very average.

Breakfast was not great and we didn't receive what we had ordered. I wouldn't recommend this place, it really is not value for money.

We stayed at this place one night while hiking the Great Glen Way.

The service was courteous, rooms very comfortable and clean, good breakfast, superb restaurant.
There is a small general store across the street to stock up before the hike.

After making a hotel booking 3 weeks earlier and checking the booking was in order 2 weeks before our stay we arrived at the Glenmoriston Arms to be told by a rude man with no hotel customer care skills that no e-mails had been sent by me relating to any booking or enquiry! Due to the rudeness of the man (he didnt even offer to check the e-mail system in the hotel), we left quickly due to the way I was dealt with and the manner I was spoken to, as for the accommodation, we didnt get past the reception desk so I cant comment, I have since contacted the hotel who have said they do have my e-mails (4 to be precise, due to todays incompetence I double checked the booking), and the only apology I was given was that it was a booking error! We were still offered a room by them for the night in question but declined due to the level of service (lack of), we had a wonderful stay in the Lovat Arms Hotel in Fort Augustus who went out of their way to assist us.
