“Magic Rail Trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2013

Had long wanted to do this. It was a trip through two hours of wilderness in the heart of Scotland. The return journey was at 06:21 from Kyle and it had been snowing. I enjoyed this journey on a fairly empty train (until Dingwall) witha coffee from the conductor through a winter wonderland seeing stags and deer and the scottish countryside in all its glory. I have toured by train in Canada and Switzerland and believe me this was up there with them but this cost a fraction at £19.00 return to Edinburgh with and over 55 club ticket. If you like railways and scenery this is a must do.

Very scenic route and always helpful staff on the trains. Not the busiest of lines, so always get a table seat which helps when you have long legs!

“Fantastic even in winter!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2013

This is truly an unmissable journey! Although we experienced the trip in February, we thoroughly appreciated the sheer beauty of this journey. We have travelled this way by car, but the rail journey adds a whole different aspect to the area. Only by rail can one truly appreciate the wilderness experience between Garve and Lochcarron and then the beautiful vistas towards Plockton and the Isle of Skye. This must surely be one of the best truly Scottish experiences for tourists from abroad. Although Kyle itself is not particularly attractive, the views over to Skye make up for any shortcomings, as does the excellent eatery Harry's Bothy, which is an excellent spot for a wholesome meal before returning to the train!

“Outstanding scenary - some of the best in UK”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2012

The views from the train on the right side for the first 10 mile from Kyle of Lochalsh are out of this world.

Having travelled extensively around the world I can only compare with some of the views inland from Vancouver, Canada.

After seeing the mountains of Skye you get to see more mountains and the lochs with the railway line running right next to the water.

It's quite a feature in the UK having 'request stops'. A bit like a bus that when you request it to stop it will stop at a remote station with no more than a few houses near the platform.

OK you've got to time it right & get the right weather to see the fantastic land.
In the autumn the there's little point in getting the last train out of Inverness as it arrives after 8pm so most of the route is pitch dark.
Leaving Kyle of Lochalsh at lunchtine in Autumn means it's day light all the way.
Finally don't forget to see the canal just before entering the City of Inverness
